Fly Fishing
PERSONAL GEAR: Each fisherman will need to bring the following gear. Most people bring too much, rather than too little gear. Please limit to 40 lbs.
___ Pants___ Polar Fleece or Down Jacket ___ CampShoes___ Day Pack for gear
___ Shirt___ Good Rain Suit___ Camera & Film ___ Flashlight, small
___ Socks___ Sunglasses, Poloroid___ Fishing Kit (see below)___ Needle-nose pliers
___ Underclothes___ Waders or Hip Boots*___ Strapping Tape, 1 roll___ Cap
___ Lt. Wt. Long___ Fish Cooler*___ Personal Kit___ Gloves
Underwear___ Ziploc Gallon Size Bags, 48 ea.
Leave travel clothes in suitcase at the hotel, if possible.
IMPORTANT:PLEASE REFINE YOUR GEAR TO KEEP BULK AND WEIGHT TO A MINIMUM. FLOATPLANES ARE INCREDIBLY LIMITED ON SPACE.
WADERS: *You will be doing a lot of walking and stream fishing so comfortable waders or hip boots are a must. The stocking-foot neoprene or nylon with good wading shoes, such as Orvis, are probably the best, although LaCrosse ankle-fit hip boots or waders are good also. The new breathable Orvis “No Sweat” waders are incredibly comfortable to walk in.
FISH COOLERS: *We allow each fisherman to take home a cooler of salmon. A 48-qt. size will hold 70 lbs., and that is the maximum that the airlines will accept. Any larger is excess bulk. Put your clothes and empty duffel bag in your cooler on the way in; fish in the cooler and clothes in the duffel on your way out. Better yet, purchase a nylon collapsible cooler which are becoming more widely available, or you many purchase one at camp. I will have 48 qt. insulated nylon coolers at camp for $27.50 ea., but you should let me know if you’ll be needing one.
FLY FISHING: Fly-fishing is tremendous on the Ayakulik! Because of big water, big fish, and wind, a large fly rod is best. Each reel should have 100 yards of 20 lb. test mono. or new Kevlar backing. Best reels have a good drag and anti-reverse handle.
