Substance Abuse Prevention

Katie Bee at , Julie Larson at or

Tessa Schwake at

  • Substance-Free Allamakee: This coalition is currently working to build coalition capacity. If you or someone you know is interested in decreasing substance use and abuse in the county, please contact Katie Bee. This fall, the coalition will be delivering “Not in our house/our car” bookmarks to area daycares. These bookmarks encourage parents/guardians to not smoke in their homes or cars. The purpose of this campaign is to keep children safe from second and third-hand smoke.
  • The next Substance-Free Allamakee meeting will take place on Thursday, August 29th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waukon City Club. All Allamakee County residents are encouraged to attend.
  • Tessa Schwake, Tobacco Coordinator, is looking for any businesses/organizations that would be willing to update/create tobacco free policies. If you know of anyone interested, please have them contact Tessa at 563-387-1720

Comprehensive Grant

Katie Bee at r Julie Larson at

  • This year, the Comprehensive Grant will focus on four priority issues. They will consist of preventing underage drinking, adult binge drinking, prescription drug abuse, and marijuana use.
  • This will be done through coalition work, media campaigns, policy and practice change, education, and other strategies to reduce alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug use.
  • Comprehensive Grant staff serves as the Allamakee County Liaison for the SPF SIG Grant. The Liaison role is to support the SPF SIG Coordinator and provide technical assistance for prevention efforts. They also are the link between the Comprehensive and SPF SIG Grants to ensure there is no duplication of services.

Allamakee Mentoring Program:

  • In June we celebrated 14 years of offering mentors to youth in the county with a celebration at the park and played Frisbee golf.
  • There are currently SEVEN youth connected to a positive adult role model as their mentor.
  • We currently have FOUR boys who are ready for a mentor. (Their bios are below.) They would be open to a female or male mentor to spend time with.
  • You can be a vital part of making a difference in the life of a child by being part of mentoring in some way!
