SECONDARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM BLOCKS

Description: A block of 4 Classrooms block will be constructed in the village since there is no existence of public Secondary School to support educational facilities within the community. The work will involve clearing the bush paths and breaking of grounds for foundation structure. Volunteers will also be given some other tasks relating to the completion of the project. The project was initiated by the efforts of the youths and leaders in the town. It is placed under the activities of the Community Development Association in the Town.

Type of Work: Volunteers will work together with the youths and leaders of the communities. There are light activities for volunteers who are not skilled or with extra energy to engage in other works. There will be gathering of blocks, mixing cement and support other skilled workers that are placed in the project.

Study Part: Education / Construction / Intercultural

Accommodation: Accommodation will be in the public school closer to the project and sleeping on the raffia mats. Volunteer may come with own sleeping bags and sheets.

Language: English (It is important that at least volunteer should have a bit of spoken English and can easily communicate with local community)

Qualification: There is no special requirement other than physical presence and volunteer motivated for North-South Project. Please come working gloves, water proof clothes and booths.

Terminal: The project is located at Soju-Olu Isokan Town in the Ewekoro LGA area of Ogun State, Western part of Nigeria. It is about 5km to Lagos State from the Airport. The mobility is eco-friendly and accessible to major cities.

Other Useful Info: Excursions is envisioned at Olumo Rock, ancient monument in Abeokuta. Participation fee is €250. There is no additional fees apart from expected participation fees to be paid on arrival by volunteer.

Permaculture Forest Garden

Description: Permaculture Forest Garden (Environmental Education Centre) project teaches permaculture, environmental education and sustainability topics to the youngsters in the community. Our workcamp focuses on improving facilities on the project centre and to support practical and theoretical learning about environmental issues among volunteers and young people in local community. It offers the space for volunteers that want to learn about permaculture in practice, sustainability and environmental issues in Nigeria, and making handcraft products from waste materials.

Type of Work: During the workcamp volunteers will support on-going efforts at the permaculture forest garden project by engaging in hands on activities like renovating structures, gardening, and organic farming. Volunteers will have the space to learn and share about environmental topics and practical within the workshops, and develop activities to raise awareness among youngsters about environmental issues.

Accommodation: Volunteers will stay together in the permaculture centre. The facilities within the centre are basic, with shared room, shower, and kitchen. Please bring your own sleeping bag.

Language: English will be spoken during the workcamp, basic English Language skills are necessary.

Requirements: Volunteers should be open to new cultures, enthusiastic to exchange/learn about environmental issues. Please come working gloves, water proof clothes and booths. Participation fee is €250.

Approximate Location: The workcamp will be held at the Permaculture Forest Garden (Environmental Education Centre) project in Badagry Lagos, which is part of the peninsular which separates the Lagoon of Lagos from the Atlantic Ocean.

Notes: The point-of-no-return, a port on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, where slaves were shipped to the Americas during the era of slave trade, lies within trekking distance from the project centre.

Organization Description:

Voluntary Workcamps Association of Nigeria (VWAN) is a registered non-profit organisation founded in 1963. Our activities are carried out through the service of volunteers towards community building and promoting a culture of peace, promote global citizenship, facilitate learning and exchanges on topical global issues and local challenges. We organize volunteering support for the development of grassroots community projects and initiatives, which enables meaningful exchanges of volunteers across the globe to live and work together and break down barriers.

3 ROOMS OF PRIMARY CLASSROOM BLOCK

Description: The Odo-Igan suburb community is located in an eco-friendly environment where permaculture and nature is valued as part of life. The children and cradles in this town lacks educational facilities that can address the present challenges of the society. The project is a 3 Classrooms block to be started from the foundation and anticipated to reach advance level before the end of the period. The project receive much of youths and Community Development Association participation.

Type of Work: Volunteers will work together with youths and leaders of the communities. Activities includes breaking of grounds, foundation Plastering, Painting and Finishing is expected to be done on this project.

Study Part: Education / Construction / Intercultural Exchange

Accommodation: Accommodation will be in the public school closer to the project and sleeping on the raffia mats. Volunteer may come with their own sleeping bags and sheets otherwise host organization will provide.

Language: English (It is important that at least volunteer should have a bit of spoken English and can easily communicate with local community)

Qualification: There is no special requirement other than physical presence and volunteer motivated for North-South Project. Please endeavor to come with Music, Games and other local materials to exhibit during the workcamp.

Terminal: The project is located at Odo Igan (Ketu Central) Igbogila, Ogun State, Western part of Nigeria. The project is within Yewa North of Ogun State where Agricultural or Farming occupation is well pronounced.

Other Useful Info: This is a Regional Workcamp where West African Partners will exchange volunteers to the project. Volunteers from neighbouring countries will be present at the workcamp with funs and intercultural exchange. Participation fee is €250. There is no additional fees apart from expected participation fees to be paid on arrival by volunteer.

REGIONAL YOUTH HOSTEL

Description: A Youth Training Centre to facilitate the activities and programme of young people within a local setting will be constructed in the rural village. Local and foreign Volunteers will work together as a team. This is a resource centre for public seminars, workshops, rallies and vocational studies. This is to serve the local communities. A library and learning centre will also be part of the Youth Centre planned in the town. The project has ecological touch and close to forest side.

Type of Work: Work will involve clearing the bush path, moulding blocks, mixing the materials to set the blocks. Ground breaking and foundation of the building is envisioned to be laid with erection of pillars and outside walls. Occasional garden works will also be carried out within the Agricultural farm.

Study Part: Social and Cultural Centre meant for youth activities / Construction

Accommodation: Living will be in a resource centre with part of self on mats and wooden bed. Volunteers should come with own sleeping bags and sheets, only few will be available.

Language: English (It is important that at least volunteer should have a bit of spoken English and can easily communicate with local community).

Qualification: There will be social nights and cultural weekends. Intercultural activities to exhibit different cultural habits will be in vogue. Please kindly come with Music, Games and other local materials to exhibit during the workcamp (if available but not compulsory).

Terminal: The project is located at a suburb of Eruwa town in Oyo State, Western part of Nigeria. Eruwa town shared border with other neighbouring villages and predominantly peasant farmers. About 3km to the main municipality of Ibadan in Oyo State. A big town with major axis coordinating Ibarapa Communities.

Other Useful Info: Excursions and visit will also be made to place of interest. Participation fee is €250. . There is no additional fees apart from expected participation fees to be paid on arrival by volunteer

(1) Eligibility:

The International Summer Workcamp is open to both Nigeria and Foreign volunteers who are above eighteen (18) years and interested in the rural community development programme.

(2) Health:

Volunteers should be physically fit to do manual work for about 25 hours in a week and prepare to live and work under any simple and moderate conditions.

(3) Camp Period:

From January to December every year. Dates of projects are already indicated in each of the project. However, volunteers that wish to arrive earlier before the project should notify the organization and provisions shall be made to receive the volunteer.

(4) Camp Fees:

250€ euro for each camp. Please note that this amount is only application to our Short Term Workcamps and covers both feeding and accommodation. Volunteer shall also enjoy pick up / return to the Airport without any extra cost.

(5) Responsibility:

The Voluntary Workcamps Association of Nigeria will be fully responsible for your Feeding, accommodation and other group expenses throughout the camp.

(6) Requirements:

(i)  Volunteers should complete and return Application for Participation indicating Date, Time of Arrival and accompany it with applicant’s recent photograph.

(ii)  Foreign volunteers should arrive Nigeria at least three (3) Days before the commencement of the camp for a Group Orientation preceding the camp.

(iii)  They should also endeavour to obtain vaccination against Small Pox and Cholera.

(iv)  Volunteers will be expected to submit report of activities and observation made at the end of the camps.

(v)  Arrangements would be made to collect at the international airport any volunteer/s who informs us of his/her arrival before the camp. The following details will equally be needed: Arrival Date, Time, Airline Name and Flight Number.

(vi)  Kindly ensure that you obtain necessary Visa before departure and also for all categories of volunteers certified Insurance registration is important.

(vii)  We are willing and ready to support your journey with any documents to make it possible for participation.

(viii)  Volunteers are to come with energy, hand gloves, obtain necessary insurance and minds to contribute to the objective of the project.
