Big Idea: Children will look at other cultures in relation to their own. They will look at similarities and differences of these cultures.
My class perspective: We will look at New Zealand to est our place in the world. Then we will look globally in relation to the Commonweath games. / Specific needs/levels to consider:

My class learning objectives (key understandings)
New Zealand is made up of different islands and cities – (Children can identify this)
New Zealand is a multicultural country – (Explain that people are from different countries and therefore have different cultures).
Different countries can be represented by symbols, colours, uniforms, or icons. (Identify some symbols of some countries).
The Commonwealth games is a sports tournment for countries in the Commonweath (Identify what the Commonwealth Games is). / My activites that link to the objectives
Mapping activities – locating towns, cities
Locate New Zealand on a world map and compare sizes of the countries. (Link to measurement).
Use google maps.
Class study into specific cultures:
How to say hello, National flag, dress, celebrations, food, language, homes and living, population.
Complete factfile: name, map, flag, etc
Make into book for library.(children will also be doing weekly research for morning greetings)
