I had a hand-written note that said:

1.) Franklin-Simpson (town of Franklin, county of Simpson) resumed playing football in the fall of 1948.

2.) Herb Cullen coached for two years…and was the coach responsible for re-starting FB.

However, my WKC standings in 1947 included “Franklin High School.”

A September, 1936 newspaper story in the Madisonville Messenger reported…

“Franklin High School cancelled its season about a week before it was to begin. They had first begun play ‘about 10 years earlier’ and their coach had been L.L. Valentine. They had just been admitted to the Little Sixteen…and would have been the 17th school in the conference. When the Little Sixteen grew to twenty schools, it was renamed the Western Kentucky Conference.

In 1960, Bert Barrone wrote in the Park City Daily News that Franklin gave up football after the 1935 season because of a tragic accident…and didn’t resume until 1944.
