IRON 01

International iron casting & sculpture creative workshop

in Jičín, Czech Republic

September 1.-18., 2001

Organized by NGO "Kolej v jednom kole" and Town of Jičín in cooperation with art schools of Czech Republic and Finland

International symposium on contemporary iron casting & sculpting techniques. Program includes designing process and modeling, cupola building, sand-mold production and iron pour - casting. Workshop IRON 01 is established as an international experience exchange program for students and graduates of art schools from Czech Republic, Finland, EU and other countries and for promoting a dialogue between artists of different countries (number of participants will be limited to 25). This symposium naturally evolved from similar events organized last years in Finland, Hungary and Baltics. Workshop is supported by Foundation for the Development of Civic Society Prague - program Gabriel. Under patronage of Academy of Fine Arts in Prague - Professor Miloš Šejn (School of Conceptual Art).

The Town of Jičín and Jesuit College

A historical town of 17.000 inhabitants, is situated in East Bohemia (town cca 100 km NE from capital Prague) in a very attractive nature resort - so called "The Czech Paradise". IRON 01 symposium is presented in the framework of Former Jesuit College Revitalization Program to contribute a communication in this alternative space of a hundreds years history (being a part of large scale early baroque landscape composition in 17. century and Soviet army barracks in the very recent time).

Structure

Participants are invited to develop individual designs to be casted in iron and to examine the role of an artist in contemporary society, in the given context. There will be several excursions and field trips during the symposium: Town of Jičín and baroque landscape composition, Jičín Foundry (AGS) its history and production, Prague National Gallery - contemporary art collections and City tour to provide the participants with an insight into the historical and contemporary cultural environment. First part of the symposium will be focused on designing process, materialization of an idea and model building. There will be a space to consult and discuss with guests / visiting critics. Participants will have a chance to assist an iron melting cupola / furnace building. Next step is individual sand-molds production. Final (very spectacular) stage is iron casting and public presentation of all art pieces. Final presentation – exhibition - will become a part of "Kolej v jednom kole" annual interdisciplinary festival (music, theatre, fine arts). Virtual presentation is planned for the internet (and eventually printed catalogue). Media support - regular reports + special coverage (local and national newspapers, radio and TV).
