Introduction to Georgia FCCLA Competitive Events

This year Georgia FCCLA will have 10 state competitive events. These events will showcase individual proficiency and achievement in the knowledge of the Family and Consumer Sciences, Culinary, and Education. These events will offer individual skill development and application of learning through individualization and competition. These events are not available at the region level and competitors will not be advancing to national competition.

The Georgia FCCLA Competitive Events will recognize accomplishments in individual youth. The belief that everyone can be successful is the foundation of these events. Cooperation and competition are stressed in positive, constructive ways.

State Events

Extemporaneous Speaking- an individual event that showcases student’s ability to organize and present information about an assigned topic. Students must be enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences, Culinary, or Education Program.

General Requirements

All Georgia FCCLA Competitive Event participants must be state and nationally affiliated members of an FCCLA chapter. Participants must register for and attend the entire State Leadership Conference to officially enter the competitive events. An individual member may participate in only one event in any given year. Individual events evaluate one member’s performance. These events are not open to State STAR Events Competitors.

Registration

To register for the Extemporaneous Speaking Event, you must first register the Student for State Leadership

Meeting and click on “Event” next to their name once they are added. You will then click “Extemporaneous Speaking Event”. Event fee is $5.00. Once registration has closed on March 6 you will receive additional information regarding the event.

State Recognition

All participants will receive a certificate of participation. The following will be given to the top 3 individuals:

1st Place- $200

2nd Place- $100

3rd Place- $50

Two divisions: High School and Middle School


Extemporaneous Speaking

Extemporaneous Speaking is an individual event that showcases student’s ability to organize and present information about an assigned topic. Students must be enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences, Culinary, or Education Program.

Eligibility

1. Chapters may submit one entry into this event.

2. Participation is open to any nationally affiliated FCCLA chapter member that has been or is currently enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences, Culinary, or Education program.

3. Participants must be registered for the State Leadership Conference and may not participate in any other state STAR event.

Procedures and Time Requirements

Speech

1. Competitors will be given a topic related to current Family and Consumer Sciences issues or FCCLA prior to competition. All competitors shall speak on the same topic: “Why should students join a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) ?”

2. Order of competition will be pre-assigned on a random selection basis. Competitors shall report at the appropriate time to a holding area until they are called. They will receive their competition order at this time.The Extemporaneous Speaking Competition will take place on Friday, March 21. Middle School will compete at 9:00am and High School will compete at 11:00am. The competition is open to spectators.

3. Competitors may use 3” x 5” index cards only for brief outline/key ideas. All other material will not be allowed. At the time of competition, competitors shall be introduced to the judges and will present his/her speech using no references other than his/her 3” x 5” index cards.

4. Props may not be used. If props are used the competitor will be disqualified.

5. The speech shall be a maximum of five (5) minutes in length. The timekeeper shall give a 2 minute and 1 minute warning. The competitor will be stopped when the five minutes are up.

6. A microphone will be provided and the competition is open to spectators.

General Information

1. All participants must be dressed appropriately and professionally.

2. Dress Code- professional dress (boys- slacks, closed toed shoes, collared shirt; girls- slacks, or modest dress/skirt, closed toed shoes, collared shirt). No jeans, tennis shoes, flip flops or open toed shoes.
