HOW FAST CAN YOU WALK?

Materials: 1 meter stick or tape measure, 1 stopwatch, chalk or masking tape

1.  Measure off a distance of 40 meters (outside by the baseball diamond). Mark the beginning with masking tape as well as at every 10m interval for the length of 40m.

2.  We will need a recorder at each 10m interval including the finish. Each recorder will be responsible for recording the exact time the participant crosses their marker – for instance the recorder at 20m marks down the exact time the participant crosses the 20m marker. The recorder on the finish line records the exact time it takes for the participant to go from start to finish.

0------10m------20m------30m------40m

(start) (recorder) (recorder) (recorder) (recorder)

3. Time each team member as they walk the distance, with the recorders writing down the data for each participant. Have the runner or walker start moving before the first mark. Start all the timers when the participant crosses the first mark and stop timing as they cross the ending mark.

3. Calculate the average speed for one of the participants (use yourself if you were one) and fill in the information in the table below:

Position (m) / Time elapsed (s)
Slow Walker / Time elapsed (s)
Mid Walker / Time elapsed (s)
Fast Walker
0m / 0s / 0s / 0s
10m / 11s / 7s / 3s
20m / 22s / 15s / 5s
30m / 34s / 23s / 9s
40m (finish)

Questions

1.  a.) Calculate EACH participant’s velocity for each 10m interval (0-10m, 10-20m etc.). (include the proper formulas and show your work).

b.)  If you were to graph this, what would a graph show you to indicate that this particular interval was the fastest?

2.  Calculate the average velocity for each of the participants:

Mid Walker:

Fast Walker:

3.  If you could keep the same average velocity, how long would it take to run (or walk) 100 meters? (show your work)

Slow Walker:

Mid Walker:

Fast Walker:

4.  If the walker, jogger and runner could keep the same velocity, how far would they each go in 30 seconds? (show your work)
