From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

We are fast approaching the season of Lent in just a matter of weeks. Along with the spiritual disciplines of the holy season of Lent, our diocesan-wide Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) will commence next weekend, February 10-11, 2018. Having been a former employee in the diocesan administrative offices for a number of years, I can attest first-hand that the contributions made by the parishioners of all the parishes in Northwest Ohio do, in fact, support the service-oriented programs that ultimately have parishes as the primary recipients. I would like to think that the financial contributions we make toward the Annual Catholic Appeal are more a matter of investing the services we are able to provide in local parishes.

Two significant diocesan departments I can say from experience that provide direct services to local parishes are the Office for Divine Worship and the Office of Diocesan Priestly Vocations. I had the fortunate honor of serving on the staff of the Office of Worship for 15 years and the Office of Diocesan Priestly Vocations for 7 years before my appointment as your pastor. Assisting parishes with church renovation projects and forming members of parishes regarding their service in a number of liturgical ministries; the recruitment of young men to enter the seminary and to provide guidance in their priestly formation – these activities and services do not happen on their own, but require financial support. As much as one might wish to win the lottery to cover the costs of all of the ministerial services provided by the diocese, the fact of the matter is that we rely on the good will and kindness of the people who comprise the Catholic faithful in the Diocese of Toledo. You have been most generous in your contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal in the past. We have met the annual goal in the recent past. I am confident that we will once again meet the challenge given to us in making a difference.

We will have a clear expression of your past kindnesses toward the Annual Catholic Appeal with the presence of one of our diocesan seminarians in our parishes next weekend. Deacon Andrew Wellmann, a native of Delphos, will join us to assist and preach at all of our Lord’s Day Masses next weekend. For the past eight years, your financial contributions have provided funding to educate this young man who will be ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 2018. Your ACA contributions have subsidized hisseminary tuition costs and have provided him the very best education to serve the spiritual and temporal needs of the people of the Diocese of Toledo. Who knows, he could be among those priests who serve all of you someday! We are so very grateful that God is calling him to the priesthood and that he has responded generously to that call to

be a servant leader. I hope you will make every effort to welcome him to our parishes next weekend. So, with all of this in mind, I hope you will continue your generous spirit of giving toward the Annual Catholic Appeal. This year’s diocesan theme says it all: “Giving with Faith, Hope and Love”. And, as our Holy Father has stated, “All it takes is one good person to restore hope.” Thankfully and in confidence, hope is abundant in our communities. God bless you.
