Employment Unit: WINY (AM) Putnam, CT

WINY is a stand alone AM-daytime station which operated with a staff of fewer than 5 FT employees. WINY will recruit widely throughout the community to fill its 5th or greater FT employment vacancies. No recruitment was necessary during the above period as we promoted from within for a full-time position in our News Department.

The employment unit completed the following supplemental recruitment initiatives during the reporting period.

Student Internship

Three days per week during the academic year, the WINY Morning Show hosts a student intern from local high schools, broadcasting schools and colleges. Interns learn broadcasting skills, greet guests, edit and read entertainment reports and school-related news stories.

Student Externship –February 23-May 26, 2017

A UCONNstudent spent approximately 30 hours during the above period at WINY with the Afternoon Show hostlearning about a career in radio broadcast. He participated on the air, learned how to operate and maintain the board. This helped him to move forward with his broadcast career.

Afternoon Show Internship

December 1, 2015-Present- A student from Horizons in Willimantic interns on the WINY Afternoon Show every Friday. He participates in Two Truths & A Lie, Story of the Day and hasbegun learning broadcasting skills. He also is learning some job coaching skills for his employment in the future.

January – March 2017 – A community gentlemen wished to pursue and learn more about broadcasting. He interned on our Afternoon Show once per week. He participated on air, greeted guests, and learned how to maintain and operate the board.

Sports Department Internship –

April 2017– October 2017 - A young man from the community worked with WINY Sports Director covering events at the ThompsonSpeedwayMotorsportsPark, Thompson CT. The intern learned broadcast skills related to covering motorsports events, interviewing, research and preparing broadcast-ready packages.

September 2017 – A student from Killingly High School interned once a week in our Sports Department with our Sports Director. The student learned about cutting up audio, covering sporting events and writing sports.

August – October 2017 – a student from QVCC interned with the Sports Department. The student learned about reporting sporting events, covering stats, taking photos on the field and preparing broadcast-ready packages.

Job Shadow Program

April 6, 2017 - A student from TourtellotteMemorialHigh Schooljob shadowed on the WINY Morning Show. The student participated on-air as well as greeting guests, answering phones and taking detailed messages.

Job Fair/ Career Day/Tech Class

May 24, 2017- WINY President Gary Osbrey attending a Technology Class at WoodstockAcademy where he spoke with students regarding careers, planning for success and his choice about broadcasting.
