Job Purpose:
Under the direction of theHospicemaintenance worker,participatein the annual programme and ad hockgrounds and garden work/maintenance within the Hospice surroundings
The Post holder will be expected to work as part of the Hospice gardeningteam, working effectively with the minimum ofsupervision carrying outgardening and ground tasks, to ensure the provision of an effective gardening and grounds service at the Hospice

Key Performance Areas:

  • To providesupport to the Hospice gardening teamin ensuring that all workis carried out in accordance with the planned maintenanceprogrammeand in response to requests for unplanned works are carried out
  • That all reported faults and repairs are acted upon and accurate records are maintained including the dates of reporting, action taken and date completed.
  • Ensure that all risks associated with ground working and activities are appropriately assessed and that work is carried out in accordance with the specified risk reduction action plan

Support the Hospice Maintenance Worker:

  • With maintaining the Hospice gardens by planting, pruning and caring for plants and shrubs as necessary.
  • With cleaning and maintaining the water features within the garden area
  • With weeding of flowerbeds etc
  • With mowing of lawns when required
  • With planting and maintaining the vegetable plot, liaising with Catering staff regarding appropriate vegetables to ensure they are utilised
  • With planning the seeding programme in preparation for planting out
  • With maintaining garden tools ensuring that they are stored correctly
  • With maintaining all garden buildings including shed, outhouse and greenhouse
  • With ensuring the completion of the planned annual external maintenance programme - to include; power washing of furniture and paths, cleaning of external wall lights, window cleaning, checking wood window frames and all wood work for deterioration, checking drains and gutters etc
  • With carrying out maintenance of grounds, sweeping and weeding of paths, car park, and gate entrance, main entrance, out of hours and delivery entrance
  • With carrying out the weekly checks external infrequently used water outlets following legionella L8 guidelines and procedures ensuring accurate record keeping of all checks
  • With undertake minor repairs to garden furniture
  • With the preparation of green house for summer/winter
  • With ensuring that all garden tools are used safely and are clear of footpaths etc
  • Withensuring that all garden tools are returned to garden store room and stored safely
  • With clearing snow and grit Hospice grounds when required
  • With moving garden furniture and equipment when required, using trolleys and safe handling techniques
  • With maintenance of grounds, sweeping and weeding of paths, car park, and gate entrance, main entrance, out of hours and delivery entrance
  • With the care and treatment of garden furniture
  • With the care and treatment of wood fencing
  • With the preparation and painting of railings around the Hospice

General responsibilities:

  • Liaise and communicate with Hospice maintenance worker regarding the service
  • Liaise with staff to ensure the requested work meets the needs of the service
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times which includes patients, families, carers and all aspects relating to Hospice information
  • Sign – in the volunteer’s which is in the staff room
  • Check volunteers notice board before commencing duty/work
  • Work with other staff and volunteers in and around the Hospice
  • Utilise and share existing knowledge and skills to improve the facilities service of the Hospice
  • To comply with the procedure for the reporting of sickness and absences
  • Maintaining area assigned area (courtyards etc)

Training:

  • Attend any mandatory and relevant training sessions appropriate to your role

Health & Safety:

  • Report any hazards or incidents in accordance with the Health Safety and Risk Management Policy and procedures
  • No lifting or moving of loads should be undertaken has been given if in doubt do not lift
  • All health and safety rules must be adhered to
  • No equipment should be operated or used unless he/she has been instructed and is deemed competent to use the equipment
  • Follow correct procedures for use of materials and chemicals (COSHH)
  • Report any defects/mechanical faults in equipment to the Hospice maintenance worker
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the tasks are to be carried out
