Welcome to Orientation to Adult Education. This syllabus will serve as a guide for the next four weeks. It will provide information about course objectives and expectations, as well as outline course assignments. Please review and print so you will have a reminder of course assignments and due dates. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me.
Course Goal and Objectives
The goal of this course is to give you a foundation for understanding your work in the field of Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE). With this goal in mind, the course objectives are as follows:
- To provide a general introduction to some of the skills and concepts important for the 21st century adult education instructor.
- To address the skills students will need to be competitive in the 21st century job market.
- To introduce participants to some of the resources and strategies that will be helpful in the classroom.
Course Expectations
KYAE policy requires employees to fully participate and complete all course assignments. The start dates and end dates for each week are outlined in the Course Schedule below. If there is an occasion when you have trouble meeting an assignment deadline, please contact me to make arrangements. Please review the document entitled “Online Course Netiquette Guidelines” posted on the Lessons page.
Course Schedule
The charts below outline your assignments for the next four weeks. Please note: You must complete every assignment in order to receive credit for this course.
1. Week Begins / August 29, 20162. Lesson Module / Getting Started; Welcome
3. Activities / a) Review all items in the “Getting Started” folder, such as the syllabus and the netiquette guidelines.
b) Complete the Pre-Assessment Questionnaire
c) Create your Edmodo account
d) Post your response to the discussion questions in the Introductory Discussion Forum.
4. Week Ends / September 6, 2016

2. Lesson Module / Lesson One: 21st Century Employment
3. Activities / a) Review the “Lesson One Module” document which includes:
- “What is Career Ready” (article)
- Watchthe video clip on 21st century education
- KYAE Employability Standards and Implementation Guide
4. Week Ends / September 6, 2016
1. Week Begins / September 6, 2016
2. Lesson Module / Lesson Two: The Role of the Instructor
3. Activities / a) Review the “Lesson Two Module” document which includes:
- Read article, Student-Centered Learning
- Watchthe video clip on student-centered learning
- Read handouts about Connecting with Students and Tips for Maintaining Professional Boundaries
4. Week Ends / September 13, 2016
1. Week Begins / September 13, 2016
2. Lesson Module / Lesson Three: Tools for Instruction
3. Activities / a) Review the “Lesson Three Module” document which includes:
- Read articles on differentiated instruction, Differentiated Instruction: Adjusting to the Needs of all Learners; Differentiate Instruction
- Watchthe video clip,Differentiation in the ABE Classroom
- Read article on formative assessment
- Review handouts on adults with learning disabilities
c) Complete the Post-Assessment Questionnaire
