Position Description

Mechanic Assistant/Tire Specialist

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs critical safety inspections on varied Road Department vehicles and equipment. Maintains a high level of efficiency and accuracy while ordering filters, tires and related maintenance materials while staying within the annual allotted budget for these items.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Roadmaster and the Shop Foreman.

EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

1. Maintains accurate service records and maintenance performed on all Road Department equipment and along with tire room inventory.

2. Regular checks of u- joints, bearings, brakes, struts, tire wear and air in tires. Reports any repair work needed to Roadmaster and Shop Foreman.

3. Operate Road Department equipment as necessary – driving trucks, forklift, loader, tractor, plowing roads, etc.

4. Performs manual labor as needed – tire installation and removal on various sizes of vehicles and equipment, building fences, digging ditches, yard maintenance, trash removal, installing and cleaning culverts, and crack sealing roads.

5. Maintains accurate pre-trip inspection reports and ensures truck or other equipment has operational lights, brakes and back up alarms.

6. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Considerable knowledge of the appropriate tools for tire installation and removal, alignment, pricing and ordering tires, brakes, struts, and vehicle accessories. Previous snow plowing experience and knowledge of the Lake County road system is a plus.

ABILITY TO:

· Communicate effectively in oral and written form. Establish productive working relationships with other County personnel and vendors.

· Exercise independent judgment and demonstrate strong problem solving skills.

· Organize workload in a logical, efficient manner and change work priorities quickly.

· Maintain specialized records in a neat and organized manner.

· Assist the Shop Foreman with vehicle and equipment repairs.

● Complete routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

● Operate various road maintenance equipment.

● Obtain First Aid, CPR and Flagger certification.

·  Spend nights and days away from home when working in the North end of the County.

SKILLED IN: Considerable skill in snow plowing, general mechanics and extensive knowledge of tires, brakes and related systems.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School graduation or GED equivalent and at least seven years work performing comparable work tasks. Must also have and maintain a current Oregon Class A CDL.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

ENDURANCE – OVERALL STRENGTH – Exerts force and/or lifts or carries objects weighing up to 60 pounds occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently.

SITTING – Long periods of time frequently.

BENDING/STOOPING – Periodic

STANDING – Long periods of time frequently.
