Harold Sterk Memorial Science Scholarship

2015 Information Sheet

This annual award was established in 2013 in honor of Harold Sterk who had a special interest in the sciences, particularly the earth sciences. Mr. Sterk graduated from Lynden Christian High School, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Western Washington University in 1967 while also working full time on the family farm. He taught Junior and Senior High Sciences for a time before moving back to Lynden and working at the BP refinery for over 30 years. During those years he also managed an eight acre hobby farm with his wife, Elaine. He enjoyed raising beef cattle, growing vegetables, jogging, golfing, and hiking in the beautiful and beloved mountains of Washington State. He went to be with his Heavenly Father in 2007 at the age of 63.

Distribution of Scholarship

A $3000 scholarship will be awarded yearly to a graduating senior who wishes to pursue a career in the sciences. Scholarship funds must be used for tuition or room and board at an accredited/listed college or university.

*Complete and submit all of the above to Mrs. Anita VanLoo by Tuesday, April 28, 2015.

Selection Process

Mrs. Elaine (Sterk) Johnston along with the high school principal and the chair of Lynden Christian School’s High School Science Department will evaluate the applicants and make a selection. All applicants will receive a written response following the selection.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

*The following guidelines govern the disbursement of scholarship funds:

1) Academics: cumulative GPA, academic honors, and PSAT, ACT, and/or SAT scores

2) School and Community Involvement: extracurricular activities, church and community activities, and employment experience

3) Finances: estimated cost of your education and projected resources

4) Academic and Life Goals: Describe in 200 words (or less) “Why you desire to pursue a career in the sciences, and how you believe your faith will affect your career and personal goals as a Christian adult.”

The Harold Sterk Memorial Scholarship

Acceptance Form

I hereby accept the scholarship tendered to me by The Harold Sterk Memorial Scholarship, subject to its rules and regulations now or hereafter in force, to be used strictly for the purposes of obtaining a full-time college education in accordance with the provisions of the instrument under which the scholarship is established and maintained.

I hereby certify that the information contained in my application is true and correct to the best of my knowledge. I also pledge that I am actually in need of whatever financial assistance may be granted me for the purpose of furthering my education. Any misrepresentation shall be grounds for revocation of the scholarship award.

I agree to submit upon request to the Scholarship Committee a transcript or other proof of graduation from Lynden Christian High School, together with proof of my acceptance for and full-time enrollment in a college or university. I agree that the amount of the award will be issued by one check made jointly payable to me and my college. I agree to notify the Scholarship Committee within thirty (30) days of termination or abandonment of full-time enrollment, and to direct that any refund of tuition be ratably remitted back to the The Harold Sterk Memorial Scholarship.

I accept this scholarship as an outright grant with no firm commitment of repayment to The Harold Sterk Memorial Scholarship.

I agree to submit to all decisions of the Scholarship Committee as final and conclusive, and that no action shall lie for me to challenge or enforce any provisions of the scholarship’s organizing instrument or the rules and regulations of the Scholarship Committee.
