Primary purpose of position: / The Drug Intervention and Rehabilitation Worker engages, supports and educates homeless and at-risk young people experiencing multiple vulnerabilities to achieve their personal goals around alcohol and other drug use. The position provides crisis intervention, individual, and group support, and works collaboratively with the community to effectively respond to issues associated with alcohol and other drug use.
SELECTION CRITERIA - Applicants shall be assessed against these selection criteria. Applicants need to provide written responses to the selection criteria below of up to four pages in total.
Selection Criteria /
  1. An understanding and commitment to BYS’s values, vision and goals.
  2. A high level of understanding of young people’s alcohol and other drug use and trends in use, including co-occurring substance use and mental health issues.
  3. A demonstrated ability to implement crisis interventions and therapeutic approaches aligned with BYS’s practice Framework, including a commitment to harm reduction, health promotion and social justice principles.
  4. Demonstrated experience in case management and supporting young people to plan and achieve their goals.
  5. Sound and effective communication skills and an ability to engage with vulnerable young people, professionals, colleagues, service providers and health practitioners.

Education, Qualifications, References /
  • A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Social Services, or similar, or extensiverelevant experience in this field
  • Current Queensland Driver’s Licence
  • Working with Children Suitability Notice / Blue Card
  • Three relevant references, including current or most recent manager

Knowledge and Skills /
  • Self-reflective and critical thinking skills
  • Sound planning and organisational skills

Experience /
  • Experience working with vulnerable young people, particularly in AOD work.
  • Experience in a front-line service delivery setting.
  • Experience working collaboratively with other agencies.

KEY RESULT AREAS - Role and responsibilities
Service Delivery /
  • Engage young people and manage a caseload through positive relationships in order to provide needs assessment, information, advice, brief and crisis intervention, counselling, individual negotiated support planning, and advocacy to reduce the harm associated with alcohol and other drug use.
  • Link young people with other drug treatment and health services where needed to facilitate ongoing support and treatment.
  • Refer and support clients to access emergency assistance, housing, legal assistance, mental health support, education, training and social activities so they can meet their identified needs and goals.
  • Shared responsibility for operating a Needle and Syringe Program for harm reduction
  • Provide outreach support when required, in partnership with other BYS staffParticipate in staff meetings and organisational planning to contribute to the monitoring and development of BYS programs and services.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with internal and external support providers.
  • Undertake monitoring and evaluation to maintain and improve service provision and inform future service delivery.

  • Participate in regular supervision meetings, team meetings and performance reviews.
