Caleb Paul DeBuse

Dear Selection Committee,

I would like to recommend Caleb DeBuse to be a student at your University. I had Caleb as a student in my Geometry class in the 2009-2010 school year at Fossil Ridge High School and have kept regular contact with him since that year. Caleb and I would meet often on a weekly basis, and because of this relationship I have had the pleasure of getting to know Caleb well.

Through getting to know Caleb he has demonstrated numerous qualities that would make him an excellent addition to your institution. One of his most admirable characteristics is the perseverance and dedication he shows in any activity that he is involved with. One of the most important of these activities in Caleb’s life is playing ice hockey. He has been a member of youth hockey leagues for many years and currently plays for the hockey club at Fossil Ridge High School. Caleb regularly expresses his dedication to the team and demonstrates this through his determination to be an outstanding player and his ability to work along-side his teammates. Being a part of a hockey team has taught Caleb to strive for excellence, to learn from his defeats, and to approach life as a team-player.

Not only does Caleb demonstrate dedication on the ice, he has proved his ability of endurance in the classroom as well. When Caleb first started as a student in my class, he admitted that mathematics was not his strongest subject, but that he was determined to do well that year. As the year progressed, Caleb never fell through on that promise. I watched as countless times he rebounded from his failures and used them as learning opportunities. Throughout the year Caleb and I continued to work on the importance of learning the content that was being taught to him versus the grade that was given to him and the shift that took place within him is immeasurable. Because of his willingness to work through his challenges, I had the pleasure of watching Caleb grow leaps and bounds in one year, not only academically but as a mature young man. Having kept in contact with Caleb since that year I have been proud to see that the lessons he learned during his sophomore year have stayed with him and have made him a responsible young adult and impressive student-athlete.

If accepted, I know that Caleb will be an asset to your school while he is there and to his career of choice upon graduation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Katie Shaw
