The sisters enjoyed baseball, football and other sports. Amelia became known as the girl who was not afraid of anything.
When Earhart finished nursing school, she moved to California. One day, she went to an airplane show where pilots were doing tricks in the air. She got into one of the planes and took a ride. From that day on, all she wanted to do was fly.
Against her parent’s wishes, she took flying lessons and at age 25, she earned her pilot’s license. In 1922 she bought her own plane and set a women’s altitude record by flying at 14,000 feet. She went on to be the first woman to break several records.
On May 20-21, 1932, she flew across the Atlantic Ocean herself. She was the first woman to do it and the second person to do it. The first person was Charles Lindbergh.
On June 1, 1937, Earhart decided to fly around the world with a navigator named Frederick Noonan. They traveled 22,000 miles. However during the last 7,000 miles of the trip, their plane was lost in the Pacific Ocean. To this day, no plane has been found. / Charles Lindbergh

After high school, Lindbergh went to college, but he wasn’t interested in college. He heard about a flying school in Lincoln, Nebraska. Against his parent’s advice, he spent 6 weeks training and then went on tour around the country doing tricks and taking people for rides on his plane.
In 1921 a rich man from France offered a $25,000 prize to the first person to fly between New York and Paris, France. Lindbergh decided to do it alone. On May 19, 1927, his plane called the “Sprit of St. Louis”began its long trip to France. The weather was a big problem, but a bigger problem was staying awake. He sang songs, didn’t eat, and stamped his feet to stay awake. He landed safely in Paris.

Crazy Horse
Crazy Horse was born in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory in 1841. His father was a medicine man in the Sioux Indian tribe. He became a skilled leader among other boys in the tribe.
When he was a child, white settlers began moving into the Black Hills where he lived. Fights broke out between the settlers and the Native Americans over the land. Things became worse when white soldiers also started to build forts and push the Indians off their land.
When gold was discovered in the Black Hills, the U.S. government sent soldiers to remove the Indians from their land so the settlers could mine the gold. Crazy Horse and another leader named Sitting Bull lead 1,000 warriors into battle against General Custer and his 225 men. Crazy Horse and his men won the battle, but the soldiers kept attacking. Eventually, the Sioux Indians surrendered. They tried to put Crazy Horse into jail, but he resisted and was stabbed buy a guard and died.

/ Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1913. She and her brother went to a blacks-only segregated school. They did not have many books, desks, or supplies. Sometimes the schools did not have heat. Rosa had to leave high school to take care of her grandmother and mother when they became sick.
Rosa got a job working at a shirt factory and as a seamstress in a clothes store. One night while she was on her way home on a crowded bus, a white man got on the bus. The bus driver ordered her to give the seat to the white man. She refused and was arrested by the police. Black leaders decided to boycott, or stop riding, the buses. The boycott made the white people angry. Some black people were threatened, attacked and fired from their jobs. But the black leaders did not go back. Rosa Parks took her case to the Supreme Court of the U.S. Government. The Court declared that segregation on buses was against the law. A month later all blacks and whites sat together on the buses.
Rosa Parks has been called the “mother of the civil-rights movement” and has received many awards for her work.
