Future Shorts
One of Dublin’s secret societies is not as secretive as you might think. The halls of the clandestine Freemasons will be initiating film fans into the fold for Dublin’s edition of Future Shorts, the global short film festival sensation that collects short movies from all over the world and curates seasonal screenings in very special venues. From Indian documentaries to Canadian nature flicks, this Le Cool/Happenings-sponsored event is the perfect opportunity to get caught up on lesser-spotted cinema (and secret handshakes to boot).

Elastic Witch: I Am The Cosmos + Terriers
One of the big reasons for the success of Elastic Witch, the specialist record shop ensconced in a nightclub on the north-side of Dublin’s city centre, has been down to its premises. Sure, the in-store gig is a staple of record shops the world over, but most of them don’t happen to have a stage served by a world class sound-system and lights show. One of the big wins for Elastic Witch this year has been the launch of its own label, which released the hugely successful Monochrome by synth act I Am The Cosmos. To cap an excellent 2013, the shop will be hosting a late-night party with IATC and the dark-as-night, Lana Del Rey-sampling Terriers.

New Threads
We recently invited outfitters This Greedy Pig to celebrate their new premises on South William Street, and yet more bang-on-trend boutiques are opening up. Or, in the case of 9 Crow Street, re-opening: After moving out from their first shop (in, you guessed it, 9 Crow Street), this vintage trove took to the online realm of retail with great success. They’re now back in real life, housing their trend-driven, affordable apparel on the north-side’s Ormond Quay. Just across the river in the ultra-classy modern men’s boutique, Indigo & Cloth, Filthy Club launch their first line full line of clothing in a pop-up shop that promises to bring the edginess of its online entity, FuckNFilthy, to life. That’s your Christmas outfit sorted then.

Pop-Up Christmas Shops
The Irish history of clever, earthy craft has undergone a modernising revolution in recent times (as documented in our Connect 4: Design Shops article). The success of Dublin-based design in recent times means a host of new shops opening, some pop-up, some permanent - but all within minutes of each other. Makers & Brothers, the much-loved online store, has opened one of its popular pop-ups on Dame Lane, in the uber cool Dame District, housing its richly-curated collection of housewares, jewellery, toys and apparel. The cherry on top is a tiny café serving coffee, tea and walnuts by the fistful, so you can test out their cosy blankets before investing in one. Industry, interior design upcyclers, have moved from their small Temple Bar home into an enormous shop on Drury Street, nearby to Maker Brothers. An emporium of furniture, wares, prints and all those little things you don’t realize you need in your life until they’re put on a shelf in front of you, Industry’s a must-visit for anybody with a keen eye for design. If you’re stuck for a Secret Santa present, the 5 & Dime pop-up nearby is a one-stop shop for ephemera, art and records from the brains behind Designist.

Market Season
The Christmas gift economy makes December market season in Dublin, with a host of outdoor shopping (and hot drinks to stave off the frost). The Gibson Hotel will be hosting a German feast with Christkindlesmarkt, a traditional German spread featuring gyros, kessler pork ribs and hog roasts. After you’ve stuffed your face with gluhwein and pork, stroll outside the hotel and you’ll find a fairground, ice rink and market at the Point Village Winterfest. The hippest of all jumbo sales, Dublin Flea Market, will host a special three-day extravaganza in Smithfield’s Block T featuring not only vintage and found goods, but hand-crafted gifts from Dublin’s finest creatives to set your stocking-fillers apart from the rest. The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is a more traditional, though no less worthwhile option, featuring Victorian fairground rides, mulled wine and a million handy stalls set up in the gorgeous Georges Dock area.

That’s why this year’s second Mercury Prize nomination and ever-increasing success for Villagers, the folk project of Dubliner Conor O’Brien has been so exciting for his fans both at home and abroad – and there are a LOT of those fans. Known for his heart-stopping live shows (just ask Jools Holland), Villagers’ brand of gentle sentimentality is the absolute perfect soundtrack for the festive season. Pick up a ticket for one of his two Yuletide shows before they sell out, and find out for yourself.
