Title / Demonstrate knowledge of New Zealand and international laws of trade

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who need to understand the legal framework for national and international trading activities.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: New Zealand legislation and sources of advice relating to international trade; legal requirements for international trade-related insurance, carriage of goods and product liability; and regulations relating to the import and export of goods.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of New Zealand legislation and sources of advice relating to international trade.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Provisions of New Zealand legislation are described in terms of their impact on international trade.

1.2 Sources of advice for importers and exporters are identified and an explanation of their role is given.

Range sources of advice include – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), Ministry of Economic Development (MED), New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), Export New Zealand, Chambers of Commerce, Business Development Boards, lawyers, consultants, international agencies, foreign embassies and consulates;

a minimum of four.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of legal requirements for international trade-related insurance, carriage of goods and product liability.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Types of contracts for the international carriage of goods are described.

Range three from – Contract of Affreightment, intermodal, multimodal, air, road, rail.

2.2 Legal implications of documents used in the export and import of goods are described.

Range may include but is not limited to – commercial invoices, bills of lading, certificate of origin, inward manifests, air waybills, carter's note, waybills and consignment notes;

a minimum of three.

2.3 Legal requirements and insurance provisions for product and transport liability are described.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of regulations relating to the import and export of goods.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Regulations governing the protection of New Zealand's borders through control over the import and export of goods are identified and described.

3.2 Prohibited and restricted goods are identified and explained.

3.3 Import regulations for an international market are identified and described.
