RUBRICS FOR A PROJECT ON PROVINCES AND FOODS

You have a project dealing with a certain French province, either Burgundy, Alsace, Rhone-Alps, Normandy, Brittany, Provence, or Champagne. You elected a top chef who is the captain of the group. Your task is to research your province and find a food speciality which comes from that region of France. You will give a short presentation on the province, and find some way to tell us about the food you have chosen. You will also need to tell us how the geography/topography of your province relates to the food you have chosen. Everyone in the group has to say at least one sentence. The presentation is in English, because we are learning about culture. You may present your information however you wish electronically (powerpoint, www.glogster.edu; www.vuvox.com. www. prezzi.com, via a movie, via a music video). Your presentation must include the following:

The French Name of your Province and where it is located in France 5 points

What the geography/topography of your Province is 15 points

Why this physical aspect of your Province is important

to the food dish you have chosen 15 points

The name of the dish you have chosen to present 5 points

How to prepare the dish 40 points

Presented on due date 20 points

Food which represents your province EXTRA CREDIT 15 points

You will have 4 sessions in the Language Lab to help you with your research, Thursday and Friday, Dec. 6th and 7th and Monday and Tuesday, 12/10th and 11th. The presentation is due on: Thursday, Dec. 13th.

Nom du “premier chef”:

You have a project dealing with a certain French province, either Burgundy, Alsace, Rhone-Alps, Normandy, Brittany, Provence, or Champagne. You elected a top chef who is the captain of the group. You will have 4 class periods to work on this project. Your first task is to research your province and find a food specialty which comes from that region of France. You will give a short presentation on the province, and find some way to tell us about the food you have chosen. You will also need to tell us how the geography/topography of your province relates to the food you have chosen. When you have chosen your food to present, your second task will be to do the following because this project also involves health and nutrition. Here is the setting/scenario for this aspect of your project:

“President Obama has decided that as of July 1st, 2014, only healthy foods should be served in school cafeterias. Vending machines will be removed, unless they are filled with healthy snacks. Fund raising activities can not involve candy, donuts, or bake sales. Healthy Foods, nutritious foods and snacks will be given priority.”

You are studying a specific area of France and what foods come from that area. What is the “French paradox” in relation to their lifestyles? You need to research the nutrition and caloric value of the food you present, and then make a determination if this particular French dish is healthy or not, and would you recommend it to be served in our school cafeteria. For this section of your project you will need to create a poster in French about healthy eating and then another poster entitled: Vous êtes ce que vous mangez (“You are what you eat”). For this second poster you will illustrate a person mutating into the French food that you have chosen, with 3 bullet points in English indicating the possible unhealthy aspects of the food you have chosen and then 3 bullet points indicating the healthy parts of the food. For this part of your project the following websites may be of help:

Are there statistical differences in weight (and other health indicators) among different populations around the world? What factors might contribute to those differences?

Ask students what is their opinion of McDonald’s and its enormous impact on the world. What are its positive effects? What are its negative effects?

Is good nutrition solely a personal issue, or do we have a larger obligation to the community? To the world?

How are issues of nutrition and health viewed in other countries around the world?
