MEETING OF JULY 28, 2014

Members were met at the door by Mimi Gaffey, Robyn Hill, Ken Clark, Randy Ferren, Bruce Stewart, and Bob Brue. Harold Stidolph, at the keyboard, serenaded us in to the tune of “Summertime” on this hot, sweltery day. President Mark Ealy called the meeting to order and welcomed all the members and guests. Stan Prowse led us in the “Smile” song, and later in “God Bless America”. In the interim, Maureen Simons led us in the Pledge, and we learned from Pat Hurley that “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” (Pablo Picasso) And in some small print: “Life: Available for a limited time only. Limit one (1) per person. Subject to change without notice. Provided ‘as is’ and without any warranties. Nontransferable and is the sole responsibility of the recipient. May incur damages arising from use or misuse. Additional parts sold separately. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thank you letters received: From Mira Costa College for our $6,500 donation to scholarships for members of the military; and from Solutions for Change, for the opportunity to have provided us with both a program and a Lunch & Learn.

Brewfest: Mike Pfankuch announced the first annual Carlsbad Rotarys Brewfest 2014, scheduled for Sunday October 5, at Holiday Park. Mike is looking for volunteers to help with social media. Clint Voltmer need not apply.

Scholarship Fund: Robyn Hill announced recent card sales, in the amount of $84 to benefit the scholarship fund.

Golf: Randy Ferren reminded everyone that the Club's 11th Annual Teens and Marines Golf Tournament takes place on August 7. Auction items should be delivered to Kori Dolkas by Friday, August 1.

Social: Nancy Starling announced A Day at the Races on Friday, August 29. $18 General Admission, free concert included.

Membership Updates: Courtney Tuggle is on medical leave from the Club. Gene Ross is also on medical leave from the Club. Don Beaumarchais has resigned from the Club due to a job change.Stan Prowse and Bob Brue plan to attend the District Leadership Conference on September 9.

WHO AM I NOW?

Dawn Van Siclen, the gal from Florida, came west with her parents, who were horse people. They had a Turf Champ in 1985, and entered the Kentucky Derby. Dawn graduated from the University of Florida, and is married to Jeff. Dawn has two boys, 15 and 16, the youngest is incoming Interact President at Carlsbad High School. He also went to Spain on a Rotary Youth Exchange. Dawn is an owner/broker at Home Life Village Realtors, and Rotarian of the Year. Her Rotary Passion is “Kids”: LEAD Program; Interact; and the Jefferson Christmas Party.

Ken Ryan, the guy from Boston, is 12 years a Rotarian. When he came to San Diego he decided to hold on to the Red Sox and Celtics, and release the Patriots in favor of the Chargers. Ken holds a bachelor's degree from UMass, Amherst, and an MBA from the University of San Diego. He's been 25 years a garbage man. He's the man to Talk Trash to. He's been married to Suzy for 25 years, and they have three Carlsbad High School graduate kids. Two are out of college, and one will graduate this year. Ken's Rotary Passion is “Community Service”. His favorite project is the Centennial Project at Hosp Grove.

ROTO-ROOTER PHIL URBINA

Roto-Rooter Phil Urbina took the offensive for the last time this month, fining:

  • Tom Applegate (Chief Roto-Rooter): $30 for putting Phil in the position of having to talk (Roto-Rooter) when the District Governor is visiting.
  • Everybody who liked the Oktoberfest Facebook Page last week (178 likes), no fine, but entry in a new mystery raffle for a car key found. Oh, that belongs to Sherry Courtney-Lawrence: $100.
  • Father Ted Atwood: no fine, as the voice of compassion after the shooting down of the Malaysian Jetliner over the Ukraine last week. He was also recorded in 1988 during the USS Vincennes incident.
  • Neal Stehly: $20 for an article about his family in a California Bountiful article, when coupled with his son's admission to TCU school of journalism and a trip to Catalina in a 19 ½ foot boat.
  • Rev. Laura Sheridan-Campbell: $40 or $50 or $30 for a trip to the San Juan Islands.
  • Richard Weston: $60 for a trip with his family to Manhattan and D.C.
  • Pili Hernandez: $80 for a trip to Spain, Italy, France, and Austria.
  • Dave Dana: $20 for his 12-year-old grandson, who's going to Japan to play Little League Baseball, plus $10 for misidentifying him as his son.
  • Randy Ferren: $20, for playing golf every Wednesday.
  • Harry Peacock: Got fined $20 because he reported that Josh Rytz’s son won the KUSI Play of The Week last week.
  • An Lu and Yvonne Finocchiaro: Lu was fined $4; Finocchiaro was hit with$27 - fines based on the number of letters in each full name. Lu has the shortest name in the Club.

PROGRAM – DISTRICT GOVERNOR LOUISE ANDRES

Louise Andres had a career as a programmer at NASA and in sales at IBM. She retired in 2005. She has been married 45 years to her husband, Steve, and has two children and three grandchildren. She is past-president of the La Jolla Sunrise Club.

Louise has been in love with Rotary since her first meeting, which took place at the UCSD Supercomputer facility. Although she was impressed by the chance to visit this important technological facility, it was a spontaneous undertaking from the floor of the Rotary meeting that impressed her most. A letter was read about the need for generators in a Pakistani refugee camp. Within minutes, the money was raised to provide three generators and transportation to get them to Pakistan in under a week. Real, tangible help for those in need, right there, right then.

Governor Andres described three aspects of Rotary which inspire her: Hands-on Projects; Doing Things for Others and Kids; and International Projects. She told about a project her club undertook to refurbish the house of a poor homeowner and her blind husband, who had been swindled by a prior contractor. She recounted a message from Helen Keller: “Perform humble tasks as if they were great and noble.” She described a microcredit project in which a landless laborer in Nepal was lent $4, which was used to buy scissors, a comb, and a mirror, and became a self-supporting, independent businessman.

The Governor reminded us of District projects in Fiji, Equator, Jamaica, and Mexico. She invited us to join 1000 Smiles trips to Ensenada four times each year, where children with cleft palates are given a new chance at life. She encouraged us to become an EREY club: “Every Rotarian Every Year” speaking of Paul Harris sustaining gifts.

Governor Andres implored us to “Never Give Up”. Finally, after 30 years of work, the goal of Polio Plus is in sight: eradicating Polio from the face of the earth. “It's better to light a single candle than to sit in the dark and curse”.

And come to the District Conference in Palm Springs, October 24-26.
