Introduction
“ One of the pleasures of Spitalfields Music’s festivals is their human warmth.”
Daily Telegraph, June 2012
“ I will never forget that day – people stood up and they were cheering!” Young participant Summer 2012
Phoenix School participant, June 2012
Based in and inspired by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Spitalfields Music runs a Summer Festival in June, Winter Festival in December and a year-round Learning & Participation Programme. It reaches around 50,000 people live each year (a combination of local people and visitors to the area) and over 1 million through broadcast and podcast. The charity has a turnover of just under £1 million and brings £2.5 million in economic benefit to the area.
The affairs of Spitalfields Music are managed by the directors (of which there are currently 10), who are members of the Spitalfields Music Council. The Chair of the Council, Sir Alan Moses, seeks four new Council Members to support the governance of the charity and help achieve its aims.
The time commitment for these roles, which are not remunerated, is expected to be around 50 hours a year, including meetings, attending festival events and fundraising. It is expected that candidates will join the Council from September 2013.
Spitalfields Music
Who we are
Spitalfields Music is an arts charity based in Tower Hamlets. It is known for unusual and high quality programming of baroque and contemporary music, combined with a ground-breaking commitment to its local community. These two themes run through its biannual classical music festivals and its year-round Learning & Participation Programme, weaving together and feeding each other.
The charity leads its field with a distinctive combination of artistic excellence and innovative community engagement. In 2011/12 Spitalfields Music won two prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Awards for its programme, a commendation from the Royal Society for Public Health, and was shortlisted in the arts category for the Civil Society Awards. Its activity is also often used as a model of practice by others.
Each year the charity workswith around 30,000 people, offering c. 100 events and 250 music workshops. Audiences for the festivals are 50% local and 50% visitors to the area and 100% of participants in the year-round programme are resident in Tower Hamlets. Broadcasts and podcasts reach a further 700,000 people each year. In recent years Spitalfields Music has worked with The Sixteen, The English Concert, Gabrieli Consort, Monteverdi Choir, James Weeks, Matthew Barley and Mica Levi as Associate Artists. This initiative has seen artists presenting concerts and participating in the Learning & Participation Programme, linking the two core strands of work.
The charity is part funded by Arts Council England, the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. In 2012 its turnover was just under £1 million with statutory funding amounting to 20% of this, a further 20% generated through ticket sales for festivals and 60% fundraised from businesses, trusts and foundations, and other private sources. Fundraising therefore forms an important part of the Council’s effort.
