Description: This course is a general survey course in mathematics and covers a number of traditional independent topics and will include topics related to mathematical logic, sets and systematic counting, probability, statistics, geometry and critical thinking skills. This course satisfies three credits of the mathematics requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements, but is not a prerequisite to any other mathematics course. MGF 1106 and MGF 1107 may be taken concurrently.

Major Learning Outcomes:

1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of mathematical logic.

2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of sets and systematic counting.

3. The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts in probability.

4. The student will demonstrate knowledge of statistics.

5. The student will demonstrate knowledge of informal geometric concepts.

Prerequisite: MAT 1033, MAT 1100 or an appropriate score on the SPC mathematics placement test.

Calculators: A calculator is not required for this course but I recommend that you bring a scientific calculator to class. You will be allowed to use a calculator during tests.

Attendance: SPC requires instructors to record student attendance during the first two weeks of class to verify attendance and again at the 60% mark to verify attendance and meaningful class participation. If you do not attend during the first two weeks, you will be administratively withdrawn with a grade of W. At the 60% mark, if you are not attending class regularly and/or you are not completing assignments you will be administratively withdrawn with a grade of WF. If more than 4 classes are missed you will be withdrawn with a grade of WF. If you are attempting this course for the third time (or more), you cannot withdraw, (State of Florida regulation), and failing to meet the attendance requirement will result in a grade of WF. Further information is provided in Board Rule: 6Hx23-4.30: Class Attendance.

Tardy: Each time a student is late for class or leaves class early, 1% will be deducted from that student’s final average. If you need to early, kindly notify me at the beginning of the period.

Note: The last day that a student may elect to withdraw with a course grade of “W” is Friday,

June 23, 2017. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course.

Class Conduct: I record attendance at the beginning of class daily. Coming to class after I have recorded attendance or leaving the classroom during class disrupts the class. Cell phones, beepers, and text messaging also disrupt the class and will negatively impact your grade; please turn them off before class.

Academic Honesty: St. Petersburg College has an Academic Honesty policy. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the policies, rules, and the consequences of violations. The policies are outlined at:

SPC Academic Honesty Policy. There is no tolerance for cheating and academic dishonesty. Discipline can range from a zero on that specific assignment to expulsion from the class with a grade of F. Note that copy/pasting published information, whether it is from your textbook or the Internet, without citing your source is plagiarism and violates this policy. Even if you change the words slightly, the ideas are someone else’s, so you still have to cite your sources. Cheating, plagiarism, bribery, misrepresentation, conspiracy and fabrication are defined in Board Rule 6Hx23-4.461, Student Affairs: Academic Honesty Guidelines, Classroom Behavior.

Homework: The assigned homework provides needed practice to master the concepts and procedures. Completing the homework will take time. Remember, the rule of thumb is that you will spend 2 hours on homework for every hour spent in class. Homework will be collected on the day of the test. In case of inclement weather or any other possibility that the college may be closed, please complete the Chapter Test and Chapter Review at the end of the chapter that we are presently studying for credit.

Success Tips: You may find the pace of this course to be considerable fast. You will not be able to learn everything during the lectures. The goal is not to teach you how to answer each problem individually, but to provide a framework in which to learn the material so that it can be applied.

Attend class regularly.

Take complete notes.

Read the chapter sections before class and again after the material has been presented.

Form a study group.

Ask questions during class and/or office hours for clarity.

Keep up with the homework.

Please come see me, call, or email me with any questions you may have.

The Learning Support Commons has a wealth of resources, including free tutoring.

Grading: 5 Chapter Tests and a Comprehensive Final Exam - 100 points each (80%)

Quizzes (10%)

Homework, Projects, Class Participation (10%)

I do not drop any test scores, so you must strive to do your best on each test. No make-up tests will be given. Extremely extenuating circumstances may be discussed with the instructor along with a documented note. If a single test is missed, the final exam grade may be used to replace that grade. If more than one test is missed, those tests will result in a grade of zero. If no tests are missed and you have satisfactory attendance, you may replace your lowest test grade with the final exam grade if that grade is higher. The course grade will be determined by the following scale.

Grade / A / B / C / D / F
Scale / 90-100% / 80-89% / 70-79% / 60-69% / 0-59%

Note: A grade of “C” or better must be earned to satisfy the General Education Requirements for the AA degree.
