University of Glasgow

Internal Funding – Glasgow Knowledge Exchange (2015-18)

The University established the KE Fund in 2012 to support high-quality knowledge exchange activities and impact generation across the University and to support groups and individuals capable of influencing and creating impact. In its first three years, outcomes have included: contribution to ~22 impact case studies (current and potential, <£500k in translational research income, follow-on collaborations with research users and a contribution to a strong potential impact case study pipeline.

University of Glasgow MRC Proximity to Discovery Fund

The Proximity to Discovery scheme is aligned to MRC’s Confidence and Concept funding scheme and is intended to support early interactions and knowledge exchange between industry and academia to encourage engagement and collaboration.

Excellence with Impact Legacy Fund

A total of £80k has been allocated from BBSRC Excellence with Impact winner monies to enhance and accelerate the delivery of impact from MVLS Research. Funding is initially available until December 2018, when current spending and outcomes of the scheme will be evaluated with a view to determining future direction.

Flexible Talent Mobility Account

Applications are now being invited from staff, post graduate researchers and industrial partners for the Flexible Talent Mobility Account (FTMA). £90k of BBSRC funding has been allocated to enhance collaboration, skills training and knowledge exchange between the university and industry. Submitted proposals should be in line with the BBSRC's key strategic research priorities or enabling themes.

Alzheimer's Research UK

Connect immune research

This enables researchers to identify and develop research questions that can be tackled most effectively by collaborating across different conditions, and set out how these questions may be answered. Funding is worth up to £150,000 over up to 18 months.

Sabbaticals and secondments grants

These support tenure researchers who wish to enrich their research programmes and establish collaborations, by enabling them to experience new and interdisciplinary areas which would not be possible through existing funds. Grants are worth up to £50,000 each for a duration of six to 12 months.

Global clinical trials fund

This supports clinical trials in the UK or worldwide that have the potential to be of benefit to dementia patients. Grants are worth up to £1 million per project.

Target validation pathfinder grant

This provides funds for small, translational research projects that show potential for an application to the Dementia Consortium or collaboration with the Drug Discovery Alliance. The grant is worth up to £50,000 over a period of one year.

Dementia consortium funding

This supports collaborative target validation and drug discovery projects from academia and SMEs. Grants are worth between £100,000 to £250,000 each over two years.

Clinical research fellowship

This supports clinical or basic research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The fellowship is tenable for up to three years and cover salary and a contribution of up to £20,000 per year towards research, animal and travel costs.

Travelling research fellowship

This enables researchers to travel abroad to develop specific scientific skills that are essential for their independent careers in biomedical dementia research, and that cannot be learnt within the UK. The fellowship includes salary costs and up to £20,000 per year for travel and research costs.

Senior research fellowship

This enable researchers to manage their own independent research group become recognised within the field of biomedical dementia research. The fellowship is worth up to £420,000 over four years.

Research fellowships

These support PhD qualified non-clinical investigators pursuing research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Fellowships are worth up to £20,000 per year for up to three years and support the costs of salary, research and travel.

Major project grants

These fund research projects on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Grants are worth up to £1 million each for a maximum period of five years, to cover salaries, equipment, and animal and running costs.

Interdisciplinary research grant

This encourages researchers from other fields into dementia research who have expertise and ideas which could benefit the field. The grant is worth up to £250,000 for up to three years to cover salaries, equipment, and animal and running costs.

Network accelerate scheme

This provides funds for research resources or tools that could be of benefit to biomedical dementia research in the ARUK network and beyond. The grant is worth up to £250,000 and this may cover staff salaries, equipment, animals, running costs, or any combinations of these.

Arts and Humanities Research Council

Victoria and Albert Museum/AHRC collaborative doctoral partnerships

These allow the museum and UK universities to collaborate on a project that falls within the council’s subject domain, and that can provide demonstrable benefits to both partners and the student they co-supervise. Studentships include tuition fees and a student maintenance grant for three years.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council

Responsive mode research grants

These support investigator-led research activities addressing any topic within the council’s remit. Grants may support projects worth up to £2 million each at 100 per cent full economic costing over five years.

New investigator scheme

This assists early-career researchers in securing their first major element of research funding.

Stand-alone LINK programme

This supports pre-competitive research projects including the collaboration between at least one company and one academic partner. Grants are worth up to £400,000.

Industrial partnership awards

These support academic-led research projects and where industrial partners contribute in cash funding. The industry partners must contribute in cash at least equivalent to 10 per cent of the full project costs.

UK-Brazil BBSRC-FAPESP joint research funding

This supports applications that cut across national boundaries and involve international collaborative teams.

David Phillips fellowships

These support researchers who wish to establish their first independent research group in any area of science within the council’s remit, which includes research on plants, microbes, animals, and tools and technology underpinning biological research. Each fellowship is worth up to £1 million at 80 per cent full economic cost over five years.

British Council

Cancer Research UK

Pioneer award

This supports high-risk, high-reward research projects that have a clear relevance to cancer, and enables the exploration of novel ideas which may lead to new discoveries or approaches. Grants are worth up to £200,000 over two years.

Biotherapeutic drug discovery project awards

The scheme funds translational research projects at all stages of drug discovery, from target and pathway identification and validation, through to early preclinical studies. Awards are typically worth up to £300,000 for up to three years.

Population research committee project grants

These provide support for focused research proposals centred on key questions in population research. Grants are worth up to £300,000 each for up to three years.

Small molecule drug discovery project awards

These support research towards identification or validation of new targets, and the discovery of novel small molecule therapeutic or preventive agents. Awards are typically worth £100,000 per year for a period between one and three years.

Tobacco advisory group project grants

These support researchers and advocacy organisations in policy research and advocacy activities in tobacco control. Grants usually range between £20,000 and £50,000 per year over a period of one to two years.

Early detection project award

This supports research projects that drive forward a transformational change in how and when early cancers and pre-cancerous states are detected. Awards are worth up to £500,000 each for up to three years, or four years when funding a PhD.

Multidisciplinary project award

This supports collaborations between cancer researchers and scientists from engineering and physical science disciplines. Projects may receive up to £500,000 each over a maximum period of four years.

Clinical excellence awards

These recognise and reward NHS consultants and academic GPs who perform over and above the standard expected of their role. Applications for new national awards and for some national award renewals are accepted.

This supports research that produces evidence on the quality, accessibility and organisation of health and social care services relating to the promotion of good mental health and the prevention or treatment of mental ill health. There are no fixed limits on the duration of projects or funding.

These support translational research and development of healthcare technologies, devices and interventions in any area of existing or emerging clinical need. There is no funding limit and awards are tenable for up to three years.

Project grants

These support high-quality, diabetes-related research. There is no limit to research expenses that may be requested, but applicants applying for more than £500,000 should contact Diabetes UK.

Dunhill Medical Trust

Grants for academic or clinical research

These support research projects aiming to understand the mechanisms of ageing, treating disease and frailty, and identifying and developing new and effective ways to improve the lives of older people. Grants are worth between £25,000 and £300,000 for up to three years.

Innovate UK

Digital health technology catalyst – round 2

This aims to address major healthcare challenges and grow the UK digital healthcare industry through the innovate use of digital technologies. The total budget is worth £8 million, and project costs should be between £300,000 and £1m.

Point-of-use treatment for organic-rich surface water

This supports feasibility studies to explore the development of a point-of-use water treatment system. Successful applicant may receive up to £180,000 in total.

This supports the development of a remote digital alarm monitoring system to help people with complex needs manage risks at home. Funding is worth up to £180,000 for phases 1 and 2.

Visiting professorships

These enable UK institutions to host distinguished researchers from overseas, primarily to enhance the skills of academic staff or students at the host institution. Funding is worth between £10,000 and£150,000 for up to 12 months.

Medical Research Council

Senior non-clinical fellowship – transition to leadership

This enables experienced non-clinical researchers to transition into research leaders. The fellowship cover salary costs, support for research staff, consumables expenses, capital equipment for the research project and travel costs for a period of up to five years.

Career development award

This enables postdoctoral researchers to lead their own research plans and establish their own research team to make the transition from postdoctoral researcher to independent investigator. Funding is provided for five years and its covers salary, support for research staff, consumables, travel costs and capital equipment.

New investigator research grant – molecular and cellular medicine

This supports researchers who are capable of becoming independent principal investigators and who are ready to take the next step towards that goal within the areas of molecular and cellular medicine. Grants are for three years.

These support focused research projects that may be short- or long-term in nature. Grants are worth up to £1 million for up to five years.

These provide large and long-term renewable funding for a coordinated and coherent group of related projects that may be developed to address an interrelated set of questions across a broad scientific area. Grants are tenable for up to five years.

These provide large and long-term renewable funding to the medical community to think bigger and conduct a coordinated and coherent group of related projects that may be developed to address an interrelated set of questions across a broad scientific area. Individual grants are worth up to 80 per cent of the full economic costs of the research for a period of up to five years.

This provides core funds to support partnerships between diverse groupings of researchers, and can be used for infrastructure support, platform activities and for bringing together managed consortia or multidisciplinary collaborations. Funds are available for one to five years.

This supports research on methods development to underpin the biomedical and health sciences as well as methods in research for developing methods and their implementation in research standards. Grants may be awarded for up to five years.
