WINTER 2010/11 HCPS MPSSAA REGION/STATE WINNERS

Background Information:

At the conclusion of each season, the Board of Education honors those Harford County Public Schools athletic teams and individual student-athletes who win State or Regional Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) championships. State champions are invited to a Board meeting where they are presented with certificates recognizing their accomplishments. In addition, Harford County Public Schools teams which have been voted by opposing coaches and players as winners of the Sportsmanship Award in each division – Susquehanna and Chesapeake – of the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC) – are honored by the Board.

Discussion:

During the 2010-11 interscholastic athletic season, several Harford County Public Schools athletes won MPSSAA state titles. In wrestling, Shayduan Velez (112-pound weight class) of Aberdeen High for Class 3A/4A and Zach Cullison (119-pound weight class) of Patterson Mill High for Class 2A/1A were State Champions.

Harford Technical High School indoor track 200 relay runners earning the State Championship were Paige Chapman, Marietta Corbin, Cierra Singleton and Desirae Diamond.

Individual state winners in swimming, all for Class 3A/2A/1A, were Brandon Carestia (200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke) of Harford Technical High; Madison Brown (500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley) and Austin Appel (100-yard butterfly) of Fallston High; Paul Butz, Renz Amato, Daniel Schoeberlein and Chris Worrell (200-yard freestyle relay) of Havre de Grace High; and Carley Nitchie (50-yard freestyle) of Bel Air High. In addition, the Fallston High boys swim team earned the Class 3A/2A/1A State Championship, coached by Siona Walsh, Derrick Jackson Will Cross and Mallory Chambers, with team members Jared Anzlec, Austin Appel, TJ Barry, Grant Burgess, Sam Burgess, Jason Hochlowski, Ryan Hutchins, Dan Power, Jacob Ryan and Ryan Weigle.

A regional title for Class 2A/1A East Region was earned by the Bel Air High wrestling team; a 1A East Region title was claimed by the Harford Technical High indoor track team; and regional titles for Class 3A/2A/1A North Region were earned by the Patterson Mill High girls swimming team and the Fallston High boys swim team. The Joppatowne High girls basketball team was the 1A North Region Champion and a State Semi-Finalist, and the Aberdeen High girls basketball team was the 3A North Region Champion and a State Finalist.

UCBAC Sportsmanship winners from Harford County were the Havre de Grace High boys basketball team, the Joppatowne High girls basketball team and the Bel Air High wrestling team (Chesapeake Division); the Bel Air High girls basketball team and the Edgewood High wrestling team (Susquehanna Division); and the Harford County Public Schools Sportsmanship awards went to the Edgewood High girls and boys swim teams.

Superintendent’s Recommendation:

The Superintendent recommends the Board of Education congratulate all the state and regional MPSSAA student-athletes and teams from Harford County Public Schools on their outstanding accomplishments. The Superintendent also recommends the Board congratulate the HCPS teams which earned Sportsmanship Awards in their divisions.
