JOB TITLE: Catskill Trails Coordinator

LOCATION: Catskill Mountains Region

RESPONSIBLE TO/ EVALUATED BY: Director of Field Programs and Trails Coordinator.

SUPERVISES: Professional Trail Crew Boss, Volunteer Trail Crew Coordinator and Trails Food Coordinator

TEAM COORDINATION WITH: Director of Field Programs, Professional Trail Crew Members, Volunteer Trail Crew Leaders, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Field Personnel.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Catskill Trails Coordinator is a paid seasonal employee of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK); the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s principal partner in the maintenance and reconstruction of backcountry facilities on Forest Preserve lands.

The Trails Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the professional and volunteer trail crews field program. Quality trail work is of utmost importance and to reach that goal the paid and volunteer trail crews must obtain quality leadership, training , clear expectations, recognition and constructive criticism. As the direct link between the trail crews and the administrative office, clear and concise communication will be vital for success. In addition responsibilities range beyond the field and include the care & upkeep of all tools & equipment, administration duties and working with ADK’s partners in backcountry stewardship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensure concise and positive communication between the Trails Coordinator, professional trail crew boss, the volunteer trail crew coordinator, trails food coordinator, trail crew members and the director of field programs.

• Train and supervise volunteer leaders and act as volunteer leader or trainer as needed.

• Provide the trail crews with the necessary support , training, equipment and guidance to be productive, healthy and psyched for their work and the program.

• Support the trail crews with accurate project information and permits from DEC. Ensure that DEC’s rules and regulations are strictly met by all crews.

• Maintain ADK’s tradition of completing the best quality trail work in the Forest Preserve.

• Work with and/or provide direct supervisor and coordination to volunteer, agency and private groups on trail consulting, trail work training or implementation.

• Assist trail crews in orientation and training throughout the season and encourage crew members to develop new ideas and techniques to fulfill the programs goals.

• Provide the director of field programs and the head trails coordinator with current information related to the needs, accomplishments, problems and morale of the crews.

• Promote the maintenance and care of tools, equipment and trails facilities.

• Assist the director of field programs in the operation of a cost-effective program within budgetary requirements.

• Provide the director of field programs with feedback on the program, its policies, procedures and future initiatives in order for the program to be constantly improving and ultimately representing the best program in the region.

• Assist in scouting projects for current and future seasons.

• Support the program in administrative duties to include work reports, payroll and updating/ developing manuals and databases as needed; in addition to special projects as assigned.

• Maintain a professional, positive, open manner at all times as a representative of the ADK trails program and a role model to the crews.

• Supplemental duties/ responsibilities to support other club operations/ functions as requested.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

• Highly organized and self-motivated.

• Proven leadership, supervisory, and educator skills.

• Strong knowledge of trail maintenance and reconstruction techniques.

• Working knowledge of computers and the use of word processing, spreadsheets and database programs.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both written and verbal, to a wide range of individuals with different skills and abilities.

• Knowledge of low impact camping techniques.

• Desire to be both mentally and physically challenged.

• Desire to be in the out-of-doors under extreme conditions.

• Ability to carry tools and supplies long distances over varied terrain.

• Certified in basic first aid procedures.

• Positive attitude and excellent role model to the crews and volunteers.

SPECIFIC TASKS:

• Conduct weekly visits (including pre and post project review) and meetings with the various crews and crew leaders to ensure quality workmanship, professional conduct and overall support.

• Develop both initial and season long training opportunities.

• Promote the maintenance and care of tools, equipment, vehicles and trails facilities at all times.

• Ensure the timely completion of work reports, food requisitions, incident reports and vehicle checks.

• Complete bimonthly payroll and program reports.

• Meet or make contact regularly with the director of field programs and subsequent ADK staff to ensure communication.

• Conduct mid-season and end of the season crew member evaluations with trails coordinator and director of field programs.

• Working with the trails coordinator, crew leaders and support staff review and update the food service for the program to include nutrition, quality, quantity, weight, diversity and overall expense.

• Assist head trails coordinator, in close cooperation with DEC or other managing agency, to plan and scout future backcountry initiatives.

• Support the programs mission and master plan by working with the director of field programs to develop future initiatives.

CLASSIFICATION AND WORK SCHEDULE:

• Non-exempt classification

• Full-time, five days per week. Seasonal April – October.

• Schedule: varies throughout the season based on crew locations and projects.
