E.P.I.CKindergarten Newsletter-September 2017
Welcome Everyone to a Great Year of Kindergarten
We are very excited to start this first month of school. Students are working with their teachers to learn new routines, adjust to being a classroom and having many new experiences. For many students this is the first experience they have had in a formal school setting so it is to be expected that it will take time to learn new skills and at times they will be very tired once they return home. Meeting new friends, learning how to take care of our things at school and experiencing things like gym and music can be exhausting when you are 4-5 years of age. Patience during this time of adjustment will be important to this learning.
Parent/Guardian Interviews
On Thursday last week students were sent home with the login information for you to book at time with us. Interviews are on September 21 (all day 8:30-12:00, 1:00-3:00 and 4:00-7:45pm) and 22 (8:30-12:00) these are a chance for us to gather information from you about your child and continue our partnership in your child’s learning this year. They are only 15 minutes in length. Please make sure to book a time as we would like to touch base with all parents/guardians.
Snack
Snack is part of our day in Kindergarten. All students are given an opportunity to have a nutrition break during our time together. When sending items for your child please send healthy choices such as fruits, vegetables, cheese and crackers, yogurt or granola bars. This time is only 10-15 minutes so please make the size of the snack something they can eat in that time period. As we are a healthy learning environment we ask that parents are not sending cakes, cookies, chips, pop or candy as a snack choice. Thank you.
Dressing for the Weather
As our weather is often unpredictable and we spend time outdoors often it is very important that students are sent to school with attire that matches our climate. We understand that often students come in cars to school or ride the bus, however if we need to evacuate in an emergency, are outside for extended periods of time, or there is a sudden change, your child will not be prepared. Please kindly send a coat daily and appropriate footwear daily.
Labelling items that belong to your child
We kindly ask that all items that belong you your child be labelled with their name, often items in our class can be repeated and having students identify them often leads to confusion. This way they come home with the right person.
Indoor Shoes
Each child at school is asked to have a pair of indoor shoes that stay at school for the course of the year. Running shoes are recommended as the students go to gym as well as various activities that require them to have stable footwear. Please only send shoes with laces if your child can tie them independently.
Orange Shirt Day (September 28, 2017)
Students are encouraged to wear orange on this day to honour and remember those who experienced the residential schools of the past. #EveryChildMatters is an important conversation in the steps towards reconciliation.
Terry Fox Run (September 29, 2017)
We will be raising money for Cancer research. Our school goal this year is to raise $1000.00. Any change that is donated will go towards this cause and if our goal is reached, Mr Peters will shave his head in front of the whole school! Students will be doing a walk/run outside on this day and are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing.
Absences
Please call into the office when your child is going to be away, this avoids you getting a phone call later asking you about their absence. The office phone at 403-777-6740 and press 1 to leave a message about their absence.
Forms
Please return all forms that are sent home as soon as possible.
Birthdays
Please understand that if you are planning to celebrate your child’s birthday with the class that we are not able to accept food. Please do not send cakes, cookies, candy as we will not be able to distribute it. You are welcome to send items such as pencils, erasers, notepads etc. In doing so we kindly ask that we send for everyone in the class.
