Reading, Language Arts, and Science

Dear Families,
I can’t believe we have already started the second semester! I’m looking forward to another great nine weeks in Grade 6! Homeroom News and Reminders

AR: All students have at least 25 minutes of AR reading time during their homeroom block. Students should be selecting books within their reading range and taking tests on those books. If you need clarification on how to assist your child in selecting books, please let me know!

Red Ribbon Spirit Week

Take a stand against drugs! This week at Heritage all students are showing pride in themselves and our anti-drug education program! See the daily schedule to the right for each day’s theme.

Report Cards

Please sign and return your child’s report card. If you have any questions about how to support your child with schoolwork at home, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the six grade team!

Yearbooks

Heritage Elementary School yearbooks are now on sale! The cost is $30. You

can send in a check payable to Heritage Elementary School (must include a driver’s license number on the check) with your child or you can order online at Yearbooks will be on sale until October 31st (check sales) and till December 19th on There will be another brief opportunity to order a yearbook from December 20th, but the cost of the yearbook will then be$35.

Reading and Language Arts Updates

This week our skills and strategies will be:

-Reading Comprehension: Making Predictions

-Reading Skill: Point of View

-Grammar: Possessive Nouns

-Writing: This week students will practice using formal language, transitions and varied sentence structure by writing a formal letter. Their letter will be due on Monday, October 27.

-Ongoing Skills: Each week, students refine their vocabulary skills by practicing identifying words in context and learning new Greek and Latin roots.

Science Updates

Your child will take a quiz tomorrow, Monday, October 20. This will be a vocabulary quiz only.

This week our Science topics will be:

-Continental drift and sea-floor spreading

-Theory of Plate Tectonics

-Deforming the Earth’s Crust
