Tryout Information Packet for 2017-2018

  • ACADEMIC STUDIES: Athlete must maintain a 2.0 GPA with no letter grade “F.” There will be grade checks throughout the season. If an athlete falls ineligible the first time, they will be benched at games leading to a second 2-week reestablishment grade check. If they have not met the grade requirements a second time, the athlete will be dismissed from the team. (Consecutive or not)
  • ATTENDANCE: Attendance is always mandatory at all cheer activities including practice. We have a strict attendance policy in place. Failure to adhere to our policy will result in dismissal from the team.
  • COVERAGE: DVHS Cheerleaders have two main seasons, football and basketball. Competition typically falls in the middle of the two and occasionally after basketball season. Cheerleading is a time commitment and can easily have activities throughout the full year. We encourage all squad members to stay on for both seasons. Cheer will perform/make appearances for the following:
  • Varsity Football-All home/Away games
  • Varsity Basketball-All home/Some away games
  • Occasional other sports such as volleyball and wrestling to show support for all athletics.
  • Pep assemblies
  • Community events such as Relay for Life and the Rodeo Parade
  • Volunteer work such as the Littletown Thanksgiving Feast for the community
  • Competitions
  • COMPETITIONS: DVHS cheer will compete in 2-3 competitions with the hope of at least one out-of-state. The decision to participate in competitions will be made by the coaches with the approval of the Athletic Director and DVHS administration.
  • COST OF SPORT:
  • Athletic fee: $60. Goes to the school-Nonrefundable
  • Cheerleading fee: $100. This price includes use of uniforms and poms for the season, shoes, bloomers/briefs, all bows needed for the season, and entrance to a local competition. All equipment must be returned at the end of the season except for shoes, bloomers and bows. This fee is non-refundable should an athlete be dismissed from the team at any point.
  • Breakdown of costs:
  • $25 Shoes
  • $15 Bows
  • $7 Bloomers
  • $30 Local Competition entry
  • $10 uniform maintenance
  • $10 pom pom maintenance
  • Other possible fees: Cheer is an expensive sport and unknown costs sometimes arise. We will work hard to fund raise as much as possible, but please understand there may be unknown costs that come up for competition. Costs may include but are not limited to: Paying for the athlete’s food, entrance into the competition, transportation, etc. We will hold parent meetings to discuss these matters well-before the competition for preparation and/or questions.
  • REQUIRED PAPERWORK: All athletes are required to fill out the sport/club packet. Forms can be found in the office at Pam’s desk (Athletic director secretary). All interested participants will need a physical prior to the first day of tryouts. There is a special form inside the packet the Dr. must fill out in order for the physical to be accepted. If your child does not have the required paperwork, they will be instructed to sit out for that day’s clinic. If they sit out during evaluation day, they will have missed tryouts for the 2017-2018 school year. No exceptions! Once evaluation day is over, we will no longer accept tryout participants. Please turn all packets into PAM in the athletic office. She will give you a small slip saying you have turned in all required paperwork. This slip must be turned into coaches.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT AT TRYOUTS
  • Dates: The tryout clinic will begin May 8th-10th in the small gym for incoming sophomore, juniors and seniors only. Incoming freshman will have a separate tryout clinic August 7th-9th in the small gym. Attendance is mandatory every day to be eligible for the team.
  • Scoring Requirements: Each day the participants will learn a chant, cheer, a short dance routine, and a brief explanation of jumps that will be performed and evaluated by the judges on the last day of tryouts. The athletes are also required to perform a forward roll and cartwheel. Additional tumbling skills performed will increase the athlete’s score.
  • Squad Decisions:We are looking to accept squad members that will meet the expectations of a Desert View High School cheerleader. We are looking at skill set, attitude and motivation. We will only take those who exhibit what the coaches are looking for, what the program expects as well as those who meet the minimum scoring criteria. We will have limited spots available for freshman and transfer students that will tryout in August.
  • Announcement of Team: Scores will be added at the end of Evaluation Day (Wednesday). A list of those who made the varsity team will be posted on the DVcheer website Thursday morning (you can find the link on the bottom of this page.) We will also post names of the new team at the school available to students Thursdayafternoon around 4:30PM on the gym doors. All decisions are final and we ask you respect the coaches’ choice in picking the team. We make every effort to be as unbiased as possible by bringing in judges to score those who have already been on the team or those who know the coaches well. If you do have a complaint or concern about a score, we ask you email the coach. The coach will hold onto tryout score sheets should any participant want to review their score and/or notes given by the judges to improve.
  • Attire:Students are expected to come dressed out and ready to go at the designated tryout clinic time (Suggestion: come 15 minutes early to get signed in and properly stretched out). Attire includes, a plain T-shirt (preferred), shorts (not jeans), and tennis shoes. Sandals and other open-toed, non-athletic shoes will not be permitted. Hair must be out of the face.Jewelry is not allowed (medical/religious is acceptable if taped).
  • What to bring: Students are encouraged to bring water to each practice to ensure they stay hydrated. Food is not allowed during practice time. Gum or candy is never allowed. We encourage students to leave cell phones in their locker or backpacks as they can be a huge distraction. Cell phones are not to be used during clinic time. If the student would like to take notes, they may do so however, they must bring their own paper and writing materials.
