POLICY STATEMENT

Staff and volunteers will follow standard fire prevention measures. In event of a fire, staff and volunteers will take all necessary action to ensure the safety of the clients and other staff and volunteers.

PROCEDURE:

I. UPON HEARING THE FIRE ALERT SIGNAL

Fire procedures as outlined by the facility will be followed. See appendix for details.

  1. Remain with your assigned client; provide reassurance in a calm manner.
  1. Listen for an announcement on how to proceed.
  1. If evacuation is required the Program Manager, Team Leader, or designate will reassign their client to another staff or volunteer.
  1. The Program Manager, Team Leader or designate will send one person to ensure the fire doors in the area are closed.
  1. All staff and volunteers will evacuate their assigned client(s) out the nearest exit. In the event that evacuation must occur via stairs, staff will move the able bodied clients out first, then two staff will return to transfer out those in wheelchairs.
  1. The Program Manager, Team Leader or designate will take the list of Daily Activities and, if available, a cell phone.
  1. The Family Support Counsellor or the Family Care Coordinator or designate will take the Kardex before evacuating.
  1. Once safely outside, if a staff or volunteer and assigned client(s) have been separated from the group, then move to a pre-arranged designated area of meeting.
  1. Once outside, the Program Manager, Team Leader or designate will do a head count of clients, volunteers, students and staff. Once evacuation is complete, if there has been no means to notify the Fire Department then this will now be done.

II.UPON DISCOVERY OF A FIRE

  1. Remove client(s) from immediate danger. Remain with your assigned client(s).
  1. If you are alone, sound the alarm at the nearest pull station. If there is no fire alarm, then immediately notify a staff member.

  1. Confine the fire by closing all doors and windows.
  1. Prepare to evacuate, as detailed in section I.

III.FACTS WE SHOULD KNOW

  1. In the event of a fire alarm, anyone using the telephone should terminate the conversation.
  1. During a fire there is always the possibility of power failure, so do not use the elevator. Use the stairs.
  1. In some locations a power interruption will cause the generator to start and the smoke barrier doors to close. Fire doors will keep the fire abated for 1 to 2 hours.

  1. Be especially careful in the handling and storage of flammable-oily rags, paints.
