1.0 JOB DETAILS
Job Title: Phlebotomist Salary : Experience Dependent
Responsible to: Practice Nurse
Department : Bannockburn Health Centre and Plean Clinic
No of Job Holders: 2
2.0 JOB PURPOSE
To support GPs and Practice Nurses, as part of the multidisciplinary team, performing phlebotomy, to ensure the delivery of a professional service on behalf of the Health Centre. To offer clinics in Bannockburn and in Plean.
3.0 DIMENSIONS
To provide daily phlebotomy clinics to take appropriate blood samples from patients as requested by Medical staff
4.0 KEY DUTIES /RESPONSIBILITIES
· To obtain blood samples from patients
· To put patient details on sample bottles and laboratory forms
· To follow protocols and make sure that patients are treated politely
· To place specimens in the request from bags, seal and put in containers for transportation to the laboratory departments
· To deal with urgent requests appropriately
· To liaise with clinical and administrative staff
· To assist in the training and supervision of less experienced staff
· To maintain anticoagulation records and liaison with patients re warfarrin dosages in conjunction with medical staff where appropriate
5.0 Systems and Equipment
· To ensure stocks of relevant equipment are maintained. Needles, holders bottles
· To set up and maintain equipment as required, including cleaning and quality checking
· To prepare samples safely for transportation to the laboratory
· To notify practice nurse of any problems
· To respond to unpredictable workloads due to staff shortages
6.0 Communications and Working Relationships
· Maintain clear and effective lines of communication with all staff
· To liaise daily with line manager and clinic staff
· To maintain a professional manner when dealing with patients
· To observe patient confidentiality
· To communicate with other relevant departments (District Nurses, Laboratory staff at Stirling Royal Infirmary)
7.0 Mental / Emotional Demands of the Job
· Intense concentration is required when performing phlebotomy duties
· To treat ill patients compassionately
· There are frequent interruptions on a daily basis
· To be aware of patient sensitivity in working with patient groups (high risk, confused, aggressive)
8.0 Knowledge, Training and Experience required to do the job
· Must have the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, with effective communication and good organisational skills
· Knowledge and basic computing skills
· Good clear handwriting
· Able to use the telephone
· Basic hand to eye coordination
· Preferably will have completed a training programme in phlebotomy techniques
· Attend Fire & CPR lectures
