Objective: The purpose of this assignment is for the student to create an altar for the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration to honor and remember loved ones who have died. The altar can be for any family member, friend, person in history you admired, or animal.

Part I. The altar
ð Altar should be about the size of a shoe box (about 12”x6”, no bigger that 18”x12”).
ð Altar should be decorated colorfully. Please see website and pictures attached from previous classes for ideas on how to decorate your box.
ð Altar should contain at least the following (feel free to add any other appropriate items):
*a picture of the person (a photograph or drawing)
*the person’s favorite foods/beverages (models or drawings)
*other things that were important to the person (again, drawings okay)
*flowers (orange or yellow) or any other items traditionally used
*skeleton or skull (one or more; models or drawings okay)
Part II. Paper
You must type (double space) 12 pt. Arial. a full page in Spanish explaining your altar.
Questions to consider for your paper:
1. Explain When, Why, and How is this holiday celebrated in Latin American countries.
2. What are some of the elements that are typical to decorate an altar?
3. 2nd paragraph. (Explain the person/animal you chose and why?)
4. Activities, food, places of travel, etc this person/animal enjoyed. When I read your paragraph, I should know why this person was special to you.
5. How is the day of the death different from Halloween?
