ACTIVITY: Indoor Speedball!!!
Category of Game: team ball game. / Grade Level: 8
Learning Expectations: (refer to The Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8, maximum of 2) Active participation:
Expectation 1: Follow safety procedures related to physical activity, equipment, and facilities, and continue to take responsibility for personal safety.
Expectation 2: Participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness
Equipment:
-  two indoor soccer balls
-  40 pinneys (2 different colours)
-  indoor soccer nets (2)
Rules of the Game:
-  The class is divided into two teams and two captains are selected
-  the team commences a kick-off just as is done in soccer.
-  In the event that the ball leaves the ground, it may be caught either in the air or on the FIRST bounce. The ball may then be carried such as in touch football. If the player carrying the ball is touched with two hands by an opposing player, he/she must replace the ball back down to the ground and continue playing with the ball in their feet.
-  We will start with unlimited steps with the ball and change it accordingly or if necessary.
-  Score by either kicking the ball from the ground into the soccer net (1 point), drop-kicking it from the air into the net (2 points) or kicking it between the “uprights” for three points. All attempts must be made from outside the key and one defender is allowed inside the key for 10 seconds at a time. A defender can retrieve the ball upon an unsuccessful attempt at the net.
-  This is a fast-paced game. Please respect the safety of your fellow students. Shots can only be made if no-one is directly in front of you. Failure to abide by this rule results in losing possession of the ball to the other team.
-  If space becomes a concern, line changes will occur with those on the sidelines spread out on the outside of the out of bounds and able to receive the ball for one pass. Changes will occur upon the teacher calling out and if a student wishes to change he/she will be given the opportunity to do so but they must be on for 2 shifts. People out of bounds will be responsible for communication to those on the field.
Teaching Strategies/Management Strategies: The teacher will present the game and the rules and ensure class understanding. He/she will then proceed to referee the game as the students commence play. The teacher may find it necessary to make changes to the game (restricting the amount of steps, adding another ball). All equipment will be set up before the game commences (set up the nets, have two soccer balls on hand. Pinneys will be given to each team once they are divided up and they can be distributed at that point.
Modifications/Adaptations for Special Needs:
In the event that there is a student who is wheel chair bound, all other students can play on mini-scooters and people will be required to throw the ball into the nets or over the net or one-time the ball in a volleyball-like spike into the net.
Another adaptation that could be made is for seeing- impaired children. Team speedball could be used in which students paired up and had to travel the field together holding pinneys. This would allow the seeing-impaired child to participate as well through verbal communication.
