Job Purpose
To contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching, scholarship and administration in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences by:
  • Contributing to the organisation, delivery of courses and the assessment of student achievement.
  • Delivering high-quality scholarship.
  • Undertaking administrativeand other duties as a member of academic staff, and as agreed with the Head of School or Head of Department.
This is a teaching and scholarship role (T&S), where the scholarship can include research, but could be some other pedagogical activity.
This post is for an inorganic chemist who can supervise experimental laboratories (organic, inorganic, physical) and deliver inorganic chemistry modules across the four years of the curriculum.
Main responsibilities
Teaching
  • The post holder will be expected to play a lead role in the delivery of the undergraduatecurriculum, asper instructions from the Head of School, contributing to module delivery and assessment.
  • To organise and undertake teaching in the School as agreed with the Head of School; this includes providing lectures, workshops, example classes,practical classes, tutorials and seminars, in a variety of combinations; teaching time includes, in addition to lecturing, preparation time, assessment and student support.
  • To supervise final year research projects.
  • To contribute to innovations in teaching and learning through the development of teaching materials, of forms of pedagogy, or of appropriate teaching collaborations.
  • To set and mark examinations and coursework as appropriate, including attending meetings of the appropriate examination boards.
  • To supervise teaching assistants and other teaching support staff as may be required.
  • To take pastoral responsibility for students, as assigned, and to support students in key aspects of personal development planning and the acquisition of relevant skills.
  • Other teaching-related duties.
Scholarly activity
  • To engage in scholarly academic endeavour, which may not be directly related to the delivery of the curriculum butwhich enriches development as an educator. Research may form a part of the scholarly activity.
  • To engage in interaction with academic, business and community links as appropriate to support both teaching and scholarly activity.
  • To collaborate with colleagues in scholarly activities, where appropriate, both internally within Queen Mary and externally with other Higher Education Institutes and/or non-academic organisations.
Administration
  • To take responsibility for some areas of administration as agreed with the Head of School.
  • To contribute to student induction activities as needed.
  • To attend School academic, planning, and review meetings as required, as well as those of other relevant School and College committees/boards.
  • To carry out such School or College administrative tasks as may be required by the Director of Undergraduate Studies
Other
  • To further the School’s academic development, and to take an active interest in the School’s activities.
  • To participate in courses, conferences and other activities (e.g.appraisal) associated with personal and professional development as appropriate and as requested.
  • To be fully aware of and comply with the School’s policies and procedures in relation to confidentiality, health and safety at work legislation, COSHH regulations, and all local health and safety rules.
  • The duties of the post outlined above are not exhaustive, and the postholder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such administrative and other duties as may from time to time be reasonably expected of a member of academic staff.
  • These duties will be subject to review in line with the changing requirements of School, and with the development needs of the post-holder as identified through regular review/appraisal processes.

Working Environment
Plan and develop high quality independent, original contributions to learning and teaching policy and practice within the School.
Contribute to the effective management and administration of the School by performing duties allocated by the Head of School; taking on co-ordinating roles as appropriate.
Contribute to the effective teaching development within the School by co-ordinating and enhancing areas as needed.
With staff at Queen Mary within SBCS:
  • Liaise with academic colleagues over collaborative teaching, orally and in writing, in order to ensure efficient and successful course delivery as appropriate.
  • Liaise with, instruct and support part-time staff contributing to School teaching programmes through written communication, formal and informal oral discussions and appraisal, both preceding and during term time.
  • Contribute to groups such as Staff Student Liaison Committee, or Teaching and Learning Committee,
With staff at Queen Mary outside the School:
  • Liaise with other administrative units in the College in order to support effective teaching (e.g. ITServices, Disability & Dyslexia Service, Library Services or the Academic Registry).
With students:
  • Support, teach, advise and facilitate the learning of students in formal teaching sessions (e.g. lectures, seminars, fieldwork, practical classes, tutorials, and one-to-one supervision) to help them achieve their best potential. Oral instruction, discussion, advice and response, written notes, questions, comments and feedback in a variety of media. Both in term time, and to a more limited extent, out of term time. Capacity to act as personal tutor to students.

  • Use expertise and knowledge, and an understanding of students’ backgrounds and abilities, to design, deliver and assess teaching and learning.

Communication & Networking
  • Develop professional liaison and collaboration with internal and external staff and contacts as appropriate to achieve objectives.
  • Professional and effective communication with students to provide support, teaching, and advising.
  • May participate in University-wide projects or working groups or be a member of School working group or committee.

Finance/Resource Management
  • Monitor and ensure effective management of assets and budgets allocated as part of role.

People Management
  • Supervision of students.
