PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

08.15–present: Fresenius Medical Care, Lexington, MA

UX Research

•Interviewed dozens of nurses towards the design of a “Patient 360” series of clinical application screens meant to provide a comprehensive view of a patient’s history and condition; designed initial prototypes and modified after running further feedback sessions with users (nurses).

•Conducted field research, interviewing six home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis patients in the Wilmington, DE region, exploring the rewards and pain points of patients conducting their own therapies independently in their homes

•Shadowed and interviewed customer service representatives as they fielded telephone orders from patients, in order to inform the design of an online ordering process

•Interviewed and observed nephrologists at work in their offices, clinics and hospitals, gathering data toward the solution of creating an integrative mobile application suitable to all work environments and systems in the Washington, DC area

•Performed in-depth study (known as “Empathic Modeling”) of the home peritoneal dialysis patient experience: For ten nights over the course of two weeks, I wore a prosthetic abdomen and underwent a simulation of dialysis using a peritoneal dialysis “cycler” machine. Compiling video clips and diary entries, created a video summary of my experience, which was presented to the company’s EVP Chief Medical Officer and SVP Chief Medical Officer, and subsequently used to spawn discussion at a senior leaders’ annual retreat. Also, demonstrated my methods and shared what was learned from the study as a co-presenter at UXPA Boston 16th Annual User Experience Conference.

•Authored usability testing protocols and conducted usability tests in iterative cycles for patient portal application under development; documented findings and wrote up summary and recommendations

•Conducted heuristic evaluations on various clinical applications

•Created a tool for synthesizing heuristics used in expert reviews

•Led a team of three researchers in intensive usability testing for an eHR (electronic health record) application in Nashville, TN, in order for the application to meet government Meaningful Use requirements. Ran logistics, authored all protocols, collated data findings, and wrote up final report.

•Drafted training guides and tools for marketing professionals desiring to conduct their own hands-on research with users

UX and Illustration

•Based on results from human factors testing (Core Human Factors, Inc.), redesigned layout of five peritoneal dialysis disposable products’ IFUs for 501(k) clearances (a.k.a., Premarket Notification); created over 50 illustrations detailing devices and how they are to be properly manipulated. Collaborated with team to craft clear language for verbal content as well.

•Improved usability of primary patient training materials by incorporating above-referenced illustrations, and providing copyediting recommendations

Additional contributions

•Surveyed and interviewed colleagues regarding their onboarding experience; summarized findings and presented recommendations to my manager

•Instituted onboarding modules in order to educate new team members in the dialysis experience, that they might be better informed in their work
