Short presentation of the project / Specific objectives / The main aim of the SME Pro-Active Manager project proposal is to foster awareness of the corporate social responsibility concept at the level of SMEs owners, managers, and entrepreneurs.
To achieve this aim, there are some specific objectives envisaged:
·  to identify regional/national features of SMEs, characterizing corporate social responsibility involvement
·  to describe the profile of the future SME Pro-Active Manager, voluntarily committed to contribute to a better society, a cleaner environment and durable development
·  to develop specific training tools in view of improving the skills and attitudes of entrepreneurs and SMEs managers, for self-assuming social responsibilities
·  to provide access to best CSR practices

Target group

/ The primary target groups concerned by the SME Pro-Active Manager project proposal consist of managers of industrial SMEs from the countries involved in the project, and of trainers, who are going to be retrained in approaching CSR concepts.
General presentation of the project / One of the concerns raised by the Commission of the European Communities, in the Green Paper published in July 2001, is to “appeal to companies’ sense of social responsibility, regarding best practices for lifelong learning, work organisation, equal opportunities, social inclusion and sustainable development”.
The SME Pro-Active Manager project proposal aspires to provide tailored tools for fulfilling the gap between the recommended or desired commitment towards CSR[*], and the existing attitude within SMEs all over Europe. The aim of this project is to foster awareness of owners and managers of SMEs, on the importance of employing innovative learning methods as tools for reaching a voluntarily commitment towards CSR.
The project outcome will be an European model of the SME Pro-Active Manager, accompanied by the training tools and promotion materials needed to transform common SMEs managers into SME Pro-Active Managers.
The six work packages included in the SME Pro-Active Manager project are:
WP1 – Project Launching and Management
WP2 – Analysis of Training Needs
WP3 – Marketing Concept of the Pro-Active Manager Model
WP4 – Training Tools and Reference Material Development
WP5 – Testing of Project Products
WP6 – Dissemination of Results

[*]* CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility is a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders, on a voluntary basis, in their quest for better performance, more profits and growth. Corporate social responsibility means essentially the voluntary commitment of companies to contribute to a better society and a cleaner environment. (Green Paper – Promoting a European Framework for Corporate Social Responsibility, Brussels, COM(2001)366, 18.07.2001)
