President’s Message

Hello fellow APICS Members and Enthusiasts,

I’d like to thank everyone who participated in our December charity drive. Foothills sponsored a family in Catawba County who was in need of assistance to help celebrate Christmas. With over $500 generously donated, we were able to buy clothes and other items for every member of the family. The United Way was thrilled with our donation. Thank you for making the season truly special for this family!

In January we will once again partner with IMA, the Association of Accountants and Financial Professionals in Business, for our monthly PDM. IMA will be sponsoring the speaker on the topic of Healthcare in the global marketplace. Come hear how HSM has implemented some ground breaking and innovative concepts to reduce healthcare costs while providing outstanding service to its employees. The program has been highlighted on ABC News and Nightline.

Check out our latest educational offering by our VP of Education, Mike Carpenter, CPSM, CPIM. Mike will be teaching a new certification class in February. If you’ve been considering going after your APICS certification or just want to refresh your skills, now’s the time to sign up! Expand your mind.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the 14th. Until then, Happy New Year! Let’s make this an outstanding year!

Sincerely,

Debbie Boyle, CSCP

Foothills President

January Program

The January meeting will be a joint APICS and IMA meeting. The speaker will be Tim Isenhower, Director of Benefits for HSM (formerly Hickory Springs Mfg.). He will discuss Health Care in the Global Marketplace.
Tim has been instrumental in reducing costs while improving employee healthcare. With HSM's 4,000+ employees in 16 states. Tim was looking to combine plans and reduce health care costs in the early ‘90’s. He worked to transition plans to PPO and HMO plans in the early ‘90’s, reducing prescription costs. He worked directly with local hospitals and co-ops across the country to negotiate better pricing for our plans. With the cost of health care skyrocketing, Tim setup employee and dependent clinics onsite, deep discounting for direct pay services, diabetes management programs and eventually other clinical wellness programs.
With these changes costs began to stabilize. Working with IndUShealth, he has pioneered the first company and insurance sponsored Medical Travel program in the US in 2007, with medical travel to India. This went over so well, the program was moved to Costa Rica in 2009. Hundreds of HSM employees and dependents have gone to these countries for surgery, further reducing HSM’s healthcare costs well below the national average. The employee’s and their families are very happy with the medical staff in both of these locations, and return to the US feeling much better. Tim and HSM have been on ABC News and Nightline explaining how this program has worked, and spoke in New York City to an international group from Scientific American, along with many local health plan groups around the country.
Tim graduated from NC State in 1979 and began his career working in Louisiana for Continental Grain Company, currently owned by Cargill, the largest exporter of commodities in the world. He joined the HSM (Hickory Springs Mfg.) team in 1991 as a Project HR Manager on union negotiating and health care. Currently Tim is the Director of Benefits and manages all benefit programs, including 401(k) plans for HSM. Tim and his wife reside in Hickory and have 3 grown sons.
Member News
Last meeting (Nov 12th as Dec was Social) was fun with many students attending for Top Management Night.
Our membership has grown to 175 members and students continue to show significant interest in what APICS can offer.
App State’s program with the Foothills Chapter continues to grow. Along with that, students are becoming the larger part of our meeting participation. It is thrilling to know we have so much bright, young talent joining the marketplace.
The joint meeting with IMA on January 14th, with speaker Tim Isenhower discussing Health Care in the Global Marketplace, will make for a very interesting meeting.
I hope many of you can join us.
Sincerely,
Lori Bishop, CPIM, C.P.M.
