Computer Organisation – Blow up syllabus- Minutes of meeting
Unit I
- Chapter 1 can be covered in 3 hours
- Chapter 2 can be covered in 3 hours (2.1 to 2.4)
- Problems should be discussed from the following topics:
- Numbers and arithmetic operations
- Memory location Big-endian and little-endian
Unit II
- Addressing modes – 1 hour
- Assembly language – 1 hour
- Basic I/O- 1 hour
- Stack and queue- 1 hour
- Subroutines- 1 hour
- Additional Instructions- 1 hour
- Encoding of machine instructions – 1 hour
- Problems should be discussed from the following topics:
- Addressing modes
- Effective address calculation
- Stack program example
- Rotation and shift instructions
- Instruction formats
Unit III
I/O organization
- Accessing I/O devices & Introduction to interrupts- 1 hour
- Interrupt hardware, enabling and disabling interrupts & Handling multiple devices can be covered in 2 hours
- Emphasize more on Interrupts (4.2.1,4.2.2,4.2.3)
- Emphasize more on bus arbitration, synchronous bus
- Controlling device requests , exceptions – 1 hour
- DMA & introduction to buses – 1 hour
- Buses – 1 hour
- Problems should be discussed from the following topics:
- Enabling and disabling interrupts
- Vector address handling
Unit IV
- Interface circuits and standard I/O - 2 hours
- Emphasize more on PCI, SCSI and USB buses- 5 hours
Unit V
- Basic concepts- 1 hour
- Decoding of addresses can be taught in depth
- 5.6.4 (other enhancements ) can be briefed
- Problems on cache can be stressed more
- Mapping of cache memory can be covered in 2 hours
- Replacement algorithms should be taught in depth
- Problems should be discussed from the following topics:
- Chip organization using SRAM and DRAM
- Performance considerations
Hit and Miss Penalty
Unit VI
- Virtual memory – 1 hour
- Secondary storage can be covered in brief
- Stress on DVD and CD as they are latest technologies
- Virtual memory , mapping functions, paging , TLB can be covered in 2 hours
- Virtual memory and secondary memory can be covered in 3 hours
- Problems should be discussed from the following topics:
- Fast adders - 5hours
- Emphasize on problems to design fast adders
Unit VII
- Problems on booth algorithm
- Less stress on IEEE floating point numbers
Unit VIII
- Problems should be discussed from the following topics:
- Control signals for execution of instruction
- Micro steps for execution of an instruction
- Discuss each topics from this unit in detail
- For students comfort this topic can be covered immediately after 2nd unit.

- Refer replacement, mapping functions, address translation and caching from William stalling- Computer organization and architecture , , refer section 7.3 for programmed I/O in this reference book
