PRESS BRIEF BY

PROF. H. MAHESHAPPA

VICE CHANCELLOR, VTU, BELGAUM

on the occasion of

VTU International CANEUS (VICAS) SYMPOSIUM

Nano-(Small)-Satellites, Nano-Materials and

Fly-by-Wireless (FBW) for Next Generation of Aircrafts and Spacecrafts:

19th – 20th APRIL 2013

Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, in association with, CANEUS International Canada and National Design & Research Forum, India, will be organizing the International Symposium on Inclusive Innovation Projects for Aerospace and Energy Sectors (including Sensors, Small Satellites, Micro and Nanotechnology) during 19th to 20th April 2013 at “Jnana Sangama”, Belgaum.

The inaugural function of the Symposium will be held on 19th April 2013 at 10.30am. Dr. NarendraJadhav, Member Planning Commission, Govt. of India, Mr. Kyle Nunas, Canada’s Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner to India, Dr. S. K. Shivakumar, Director, ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore and Dr. MillindPimprikar, Chairman, CANEUS International, Canada will be Chief Guests on the occasion. Dr. H. Maheshappa, Vice Chancellor, VTU will preside over the function.

Initiated in 2000, as the NASA partnership with CANEUS (Canada-Europe-US-Asia) Aerospace network, to develop a sophisticated, rapid and cost-effective approach to solve the problem of transitioning emerging nanotechnology concepts to Aerospace systems level applications, now key stakeholders from India led by NDRF (National Design Research Forum of Bangalore) are teaming together with VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) to host a unique Symposium “Inclusive Innovation Projects for Aerospace and Energy Sectors” at “Jnana Sangama”, VTU Belgaum, India, on 19th and 20th April 2013.

India’s Stakeholders: End-Users, Technology Developers, Policy-makers and Funding Agencies

Over 200 stakeholders representing industry, academia, R&D labs, public and private sectors such as NASA, LMCO, NRC, UN, US-ORS, ISRO, NAL, HAL, IIT’s, from Canada, USA, Japan, Russia, UN, amongst others, will meet at the VTU to formulate international consortia technology demonstration of small satellites, Aerospace structural health monitoring and micro-nanotechnologies.

The pioneering approach of CANEUS International based in Canada has been to create and foster collaborative consortia from across the globe, aimed at transitioning emerging technology concepts for socio-economic needs of partner country.

The two day Symposium, presenting latest developments and technologies from a range of perspectives, will help identify and formulate potentialproject concepts covering small satellites and payloads for several socio-economic missions like agriculture, forestry, water resources and disaster management needs of India.

The main objective of this event is to identify challenges and discuss opportunities to accelerate innovative emerging Materials, Sensors and Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) from end-user driven applications and through collaboration between Indian and International groups.

Emerging FBW-IVHM Technology Breakthroughs

New technology options using sensors potentially for data connectivity and micro/nano technologies are making it possible solutions for development of new and sustainment of legacy aircrafts, engines & UAV’s.

Implications for Emerging Indian Markets: Needs for Next 5-10 Years, Environmental and Economic Impact

As the number of aircraft in operation and flights increases in India’s emerging markets over the next 5-10 years, maintenance costs are one of the primary drivers of airlines. With many of these aircrafts having upwards of tens of thousands of connectors in addition to tens of thousands of wires that must be routinely checked. The proposed collaboration hopes to lead another leap in efficiency, reliability, performance, and cost by encouraging the international aerospace industry to move ahead in architecture and supporting technologies that reduce cables and connectors for all systems, eventually even flight controls.

Small Satellites for India’s Socio-economic needs

Recent years also saw successful efforts of Indian and International organizations in the increased applications of small satellites (micro, nano and pico satellites) for disaster management, agriculture crop forecasting, forestry monitoring, and safety and security, in terms of saving human lives and resources. Continuously evolving small satellite technologies demand reliable, robust, cost-effective and easy-to-fabricate sensors and devices such that they complement the specific needs of small satellite missions.

The Symposium is primarily an effort for identification and further development of mutually agreed small-satellite technologies with an ultimate aim of serving India’s socio-economic needs. Uniqueness of this event is its ability to network experienced Indo, Canadian US, groups with rich credentials in sensors and sensor materials such that joint development projects are engendered through effective sharing of risks, costs and resources. These envisaged projects will have innate focus on serving the socio-economic causes and technology-development needs of India.

This VTU meet is expected to facilitate creating a technology-platform and also a tangible working-model that can provide long-term sustenance to the collaborations by allowing the like-minded partners from India and partner countries to participate at a commensurate level in integrating and testing advanced sensors, materials in near-and-mid-term small satellite missions relevant to India’s needs.
