Lecturer or Associate Professor in Primary Care

Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) invites applications for a Lecturer/Associate Professor in the Academic Unit of Primary Care (AUPC). You will contribute to the development of a multi-disciplinary research portfolio commensurate with emerging fields of investigation within the AUPC (including older people, cancer and primary care, and clinical trials) and play a significant role in developing the direction of teaching and learning within health research. This post therefore represents an exciting opportunity for an individual keen to shape the strategic development of a thriving Academic Unit. Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent qualification in primary care, health services research or a closely related field, and be familiar with working in a multidisciplinary research environment.

You will contribute to a major research programme within the Academic Unit, and participate in the AUPC’s innovation and knowledge transfer activities. You will foster appropriate links and collaboration with internal groups and external to the University of Leeds. You will be experienced in both methodological and policy-relevant applied research. You will work with senior academics in building shared portfolios of work likely to include primary care oncology, the health and wellbeing of older people and clinical trials. All applicants will need to demonstrate how their work complements or enhances existing applied health research activity in Leeds. Effective interpersonal and time management skills are essential as is the capacity to infuse others with your own enthusiasm and to work successfully as a team member. Effective communication, presentation and administrative skills are also essential.

You will be expected to carry out collaborative research and publish work of distinction; to take an equitable role in teaching and the supervision of postgraduate students; and to contribute appropriately to the management of the Institute.

Purpose of the Post

To carry out research, teaching and administration in the field of primary care.

Main duties and responsibilities

Research, Innovation and Impact:

·  To pursue, develop and take forward research, innovation and impact developing and maintaining a profile within the field of primary care

·  To carry out research, including investigations and project management, commensurate with emerging fields of investigation within the Academic Unit of Primary Care (e.g. clinical trials, older people, cancer and primary care)

·  To promote the integration of own research area with other research interests within the Institute and, as appropriate, outside the School and Faculty

·  To maintain a high quality record of regular and original research publications that are internationally recognised

·  To attract research income on an individual and collaborative basis, as appropriate to the discipline, to underpin high quality research activity

·  To provide high quality postgraduate research student supervision and attract research students to the University

·  To actively participate in knowledge transfer activities, where appropriate and feasible

Teaching:

·  To undertake research-led teaching[1] on undergraduate and/or postgraduate taught courses in the Centre, regularly collecting, and responding to, student feedback

·  To contribute at an appropriate level to School and Faculty policy and practice in teaching

·  To have a significant involvement in the design, development and planning of modules and programmes within the subject area as required

·  To have a significant involvement in the review of modules and programmes and in quality assurance and enhancement as required

·  To develop innovative approaches to learning and teaching as appropriate

·  To provide timely feedback and assessment of coursework

·  To provide support and guidance to students, resolving issues and/or referring to specialist parties, where appropriate

·  Effective contribution to the management and administrative processes and committee structures of the Unit, Institute, School, Faculty and University

·  Involvement in the recruitment, management and development of staff and act as a mentor to more junior/less experienced colleagues

Relationships

The post-holder is responsible to the Head of the Academic Unit of Primary Care in the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, through whom he/she is accountable to the Head of Institute, Professor Tim Ensor, and the Dean of the Medical School and of the Faculty, Professor Paul Stewart.

Person Specification – Grade 8

Essential

·  A PhD or equivalent qualification in primary care, health services research or a closely related field

·  Holds a recognised teaching qualification (equivalent to FHEA) or willing to undertake

·  Experience in conducting research within primary care or a closely related setting within the UK or a similar healthcare system

·  Research skills to include at least two of: literature reviewing, quantitative methods, qualitative methods and computer based analysis of research data

·  Extensive experience of delivering teaching in an area of relevance to primary care to postgraduate students and/or professional groups and within a multi- professional learning environment

·  Record of having successfully developed, organised, and taught modules at postgraduate level

·  Record of achievement as a single or main author of refereed publications of international quality

·  Record of obtaining external research funding compatible with the strategic goals of the AUPC and Leeds Institute of Health Sciences and of multi-disciplinary collaboration

·  Research interests in areas that align with the research interests and strategy of the AUPC

·  A coherent five year research plan for future work and income generation

·  Experience of successfully undertaking post-graduate research or PhD supervision

·  High level of interpersonal and communication skills, including written and presentational, and the ability to work as member of a team

·  Good organisational ability, including the ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks, even under pressure

Desirable

·  Experience of successfully-obtaining research funding from different UK and overseas funders

·  In-depth knowledge of requirements and expectations of different research funders (e.g. membership in funding panels)

·  Funded postdoctoral research experience (e.g. through fellowships) in primary care or health services research

·  Collaborative links with research partners from primary care
