Conditional Admits at IUPUI

Following the requirements for Admission established by the University College Faculty Admission Committee, the IUPUI Office of Admissions reviews an applicant’s

·  High School transcript, particularly for completion and performance in Core 40 courses

·  Test scores on national examinations such as the SAT and ACT

·  If the applicant had previously enrolled at another college or university, the college transcript(s)

·  GED results if the student is not a high school graduate

For beginning students, Admissions staff will consider the entire high school transcript, particularly for performance in Core 40 courses, as well as the applicants’ pattern of grades or grade trajectory, such as poor grades in 9th grades with stronger grades later.

In some cases, applicants appear to have a reasonable chance of success in post-secondary studies, but their overall high school performance does not meet the standards for regular admission. In these cases, the Office of Admissions has been given the discretion to admit students to the university on a conditional basis.

Students who meet all admissions criteria (regular admits) have more choices of institutions and as a result the yield rate for this population (the percentage of those admitted who enroll) is somewhat lower than students with lower qualifications (conditional admits).

While the campus raised its admissions requirements in recent years, it also has accepted fewer students conditionally. In 2006 conditional admits who enrolled at the university constituted 32.5% of all beginning students. In 1998 conditional admits constituted 67.5% of all beginning students.

Applicants who are not admissible on either a regular or conditional basis are deferred to Ivy Tech Community College. Deferred applicants are guaranteed admission to IUPUI provided they complete Freshman Composition, College Algebra, and 9 additional credits earning grades of C or above in all courses.

Admission Definitions and Qualifications

Beginners

Definition of Beginner

·  The applicant has not attended any post-secondary institution(s) after high school.

·  Students with fewer than 12 hours attempted at other institutions are considered beginners.

In some of the accompanying reports, “beginner” and “freshmen” are used to describe the same population.

Fully qualified

·  Student has completed CORE 40 courses or equivalent, with no more than two grades below C and has an SAT (Critical Reading and Math) score of 900+ or ACT composite of 19+

·  Student has completed an Academic Honors diploma

o  No grade below C and a B average in all four years of high school

o  Completed CORE 40 plus three years of foreign language and a fourth year of math (higher level than second year algebra).

o  Student who has completed an Academic Honors diploma is considered fully qualified regardless of SAT or ACT score

·  Individual IUPUI schools may have additional admission requirements such as higher scores or additional courses to be a “dual” or direct admit.

Conditional Admit

Conditional admit due to grades traditional age student (21 and under)

·  Student must have completed Core 40 courses and have no more than five grades below C. Some exceptions made for students with records that have improved during 11th and 12th grades if the student is in a strong program during those years. A high SAT or ACT score does not offset low grades.

·  433 students admitted in this category enrolled at IUPUI in the Fall of 2006. This accounted for 54.9% of the all conditional beginners who enrolled.

Conditional admit due to low national test scores traditional age student

·  Student must have completed Core 40 courses but has an SAT (Critical Reading and Math) score below 900 or an ACT composite score below 19. If a student has between three and five grades below C and also has low test scores, the student is considered a conditional admit due to grades.

·  217 students admitted in this category enrolled at IUPUI in the Fall of 2006. This accounted for 27.5% of the all conditional beginners who enrolled.

Conditional admit returning adult

·  The student must be high school graduate and 21 or older. Former members of the military who are under 21 are admitted regardless of their high school record but the student must have passed the Graduate Qualifying Exam (GQE) if they were graduated in 1999 or later. The student must have at least two semesters of credit for algebra. Students with significantly fewer than 12 college prep courses and those with very poor grades (a final GPA below 2.0) usually are not admitted unless there is evidence of post-secondary coursework or training.

·  138 students admitted in this category enrolled at IUPUI in the Fall of 2006. This accounted for 17.5% of the all conditional beginners who enrolled.

In almost all cases, students granted conditional admission are admitted into University College. In rare cases, with the permission of the academic unit, a student may be admitted conditionally directly into a degree-granting school. This year only two students were granted conditional admission directly into a school.

Conditions of the student’s admission are included with the acceptance letter. See sample below sent to beginners with poor grades in college preparatory courses.

Denied/Deferred

Definition of Denied/Deferred

Applicants who are not admissible on either a regular or conditional basis.

·  Student did not complete Core 40 or comparable set of courses

·  Overall high school GPA under 2.00

·  Large number of failing grades

·  A non-high school graduate with a GED score below 530

These applicants are deferred to Ivy Tech Community College. Deferred applicants are guaranteed admission to IUPUI provided they complete Freshman Composition, College algebra, and 9 additional credits with grades of C or above in all courses.

Transfers

Definition of Transfer

The applicant attended any post-secondary institution(s) after high school and accumulated 12 cumulative hours of attempted work. Hours attempted includes all posted grades, including withdrawals and grades of incomplete.

Students with fewer than 12 hours attempted at other institutions are considered beginners.

Fully qualified

·  Traditional age students must have been admissible if they had applied as a high school graduate. If they were not admissible at that point, the student must complete 15 hours of college transferable work including freshman composition and college algebra.

If a traditional age student had been admissible as a freshman, the student will be admitted as a fully qualified transfer, provided he or she earned a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the last college attended. This is admission to University College. Direct Admission may require higher GPA and successful completion of specific courses.

Non-traditional students are admitted as qualified if they have 15+ hours of transferable work. In some cases students will be made conditional returning adult.

Conditional Admits

·  Students who were admissible from high school but who have below a 2.0 are admitted on probation BUT ONLY AFTER SITTING OUT A FULL TERM. Exception to one term sitting out is given to Purdue students with GPA below 2.0 if the student is eligible to return to Purdue and if the student had been admissible from high school.

·  Students who were admissible from high school and who have a GPA at 2.0 or higher but whose last term was below a 2.0 (and student has not sat out a full term) are admitted on probation.
