The British Council creates international opportunities for the people of the United Kingdom and other countries. We call this cultural relations, and we believe it brings the people of Britain and India closer together, and helps them to understand each other better.
We have been in India for over sixty years, and during that time we have developed deep and lasting relationships with individuals and organisations in India.
We have a network of 9 centres across the country and a team of 450 staff. In 2011, we engaged with over 500,000 people in India directly, and a further 18 million through our digital and remote services. We have an ambitious programme for our work in India in the future, and this website is a key tool to help us reach our customers and achieve our ambitions.
We have three key areas of work delivered across three Strategic Business (SBUs) - English, the Arts, and Education and Society. Through these areas we engage with leaders and policy makers in India, influencers and opinion formers such as teachers and business leaders, and young people in education or just starting out on their careers.
Our work seeks to create opportunities for young people to develop new skills, become better qualified, introduce an international dimension to their learning or profession, and develop a better understanding of other cultures.
We recognise the English language as a key skill for employability in today's India. We offer face to face teaching in Englishthrough our centres in New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Examinations are conducted in more than 40 locations across India andmore than 200,000 Indians taketests through the British Council each year, including IELTS for university entrance and our new Aptis tests in English language benchmarking.
We have trained 750,000 teachersof English in Indiathrough a series of partnerships with state governments, and through our support to international conferences in India we give many English language teachers the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills.
We work in collaboration with Indian partners on all of our programmes. In our Arts work, we partner the major Indian festivals to showcase new music, literature, theatre, dance and visual art.
We invite you to have a look at our Events online and see which events are of interest to you.
In our Education and Society work we build partnerships between institutions and organisations in India and the UK.
The UK India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI) supported over 70 new partnerships to work on innovative programmes in Higher Education in 2011/12.Over 2,500 schools inIndia and the UK are linked through our Connecting Classrooms programme.Education UK exhibitions visit numerous cities every year, offeringour customersa chance to meet education experts from British universities directly.
Our pan-India network of 9 centres in Delhi, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore are currently part-way through the Network Development Programme, a transformational change initiative designed to create 9 British Council centres offering our full range of products and services. The programme will establish a consistent British Council membership offer across all centres, increasing our reach and impact in all 9 geographies. It will also align the work of our libraries with our SBUs, to ensure that this meets our core purpose and strategic objectives.
