I am looking forward to having you as a student in mathematics this year. As we begin the year, there are some items I would like you to be aware of.

Course Description

  • Use and value the connections between Algebra 1 and Geometry
  • Solve problems that are modeled by linear and quadratic functions
  • Represent and analyze properties of functions and relations
  • Apply factoring to problem situations involving polynomials
  • Represent and solve problem situations using systems of equations
  • Investigate the concept of radicals and complex numbers.

Required Supplies

Three ring binder

Loose leaf Paper or Non-Spiral Perforated Notebook

Graphing Calculators (TI-83 or TI-84)

Electronic Devices

The only electronic device expected to be used or visible in the classroom is a calculator. All other devices should be turned off and placed out of sight before entering the room.

Text

You will be supplied with a copy of the Prentice Hall Algebra II text. You may also access the text and additional help online at pearsonsuccessnet.com. Access to these materials can be obtained by logging in with the username nvmath1 and password wildcat14.

3 Ring Binder Requirements

The following should be retained in your notebook or binder:

  • Notes/Examples
  • Vocab
  • Activities
  • Quizzes
  • Classwork/Homework
  • Other

Your 3 ring binder may be collected at anytime and graded at the end of each chapter.

Practice

Homework is an important part of learning mathematics and will be assigned daily. A syllabus of assignmentsand tests will be provided and may be sent to you digitally upon email request. You are responsible for assignments regardless of attendance. Please try each problem on every assignment and practice showing all steps it takes to get the answer. Do your best to think through the problems and understand why things work the way theydo.

When I check your notebook, I expect tosee all of the work for the problem, not just the answer. The problem, the work, and the answershould all be shown neatly together. You will not receive credit for homework that is without work for EVERY problem.Homework will be difficult at times. I am hoping that the homework will challengeyou to think. Thinking is part of learning!

Keepthe following in mind:

Write down what you know and what the problem is asking for.

Look through your notes for similar examples.

Re-READ the current section of your textbook, your notes and possibly othersections. THE EXAMPLES INOUR TEXTBOOK ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL. USE THEM AS A GUIDE.

It you are still lost, please ask questions.

Tests and Quizzes

Quizzes will be given on a regular basis. Quizzes may or may not be announced, so be prepared by asking questions if you do not understand something. You must show all your work on quizzes to receive full credit.

Tests will be given at the end of each chapter and/or unit. Your semester exam is cumulative so be sure to keep reviewing prior topics that have been covered. Any assessments must be completed in one class period, students will not be allowed extra time to complete tests or quizzes and/or be able to come at a later time to “finish”.

You must keep all returned quizzes as part of your notebook.

Extra Help

Please take the opportunity use all the resources available to you.You can find online assistance at phschool.com. See the “Go online’ page in the text on page xxv for more information and web codes. I am available after school on Mondays and Wednesday s until 3:20. Math C.A.T.S. is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Grading

  • As a non-unit based course each semester will have one final cumulative exam.
  • Youwill have one opportunity each semester to retake a chapter test.
  • You must go through a review process set forth by the teacher in order to re-take a chapter test.
  • All retakes must be completed before the semester exam.
  • The retake score for a given test will be the score that is recorded in the grade book.
  • The Algebra II classes will use the following scale for their grades:

Practice Assignments 10%

Preliminary Assessments90%

The culmination of the above grades will comprise 80% of the semester grade the other 20% will be the cumulative semester exam.

By September 12th, you are required to log into Studentvue to update your account with an email address you check on a regular basis.
