MINUTES

October 8, 2012

Brother Richard Brown called the meeting of Lambda Phi to order. Brother Emory Lamar offered the prayer. Brother Richard Brown stated that the Brothers would keep Brother Porter and Brother Richard Mathis in their prayers. Minutes of the last meeting were approved with the necessary corrections.

CORRESPONDENCES:

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Epsilon Omega Omega Chapter will host a “Fashion Extravaganza’ on October 27, 2012 at the Macon City Auditorium. The evening will begin with a jazz reception at 6:00 followed by the Fashion Show featuring the Vogue Esquire Models of Chicago at 7:30. Our AKA Fashionetta will take place during the intermission. This is sure to be a fun and elegant evening of music, dance, flare and purpose. Please consider being a Sponsor or Patron of this event. The patron levels are as follows: Pink Platinum: $75.00 - $100.00; Pink Diamond: $50.00 - $74.00; Pink Pearl: $25.00 - $49.00; Pink Pizzazz - $5.00 - $24.00. Tickets are also available for $40.00 each for floor seating or $20.00 for balcony seating. This event will benefit scholarship opportunities for High School seniors, our Fashionetta Contestants, and our various service projects in the Middle Georgia Area. Your contribution should be made to The Pearl Community Center and mailed to P.O. Box 4871, Macon, Ga. 31208. Sekema Harris-Harmon is the President.

(In reference to this correspondence, Brother Emory Lamar made a motion that the chapter access each brother $10.00 for the Pink Platinum ad in the amount of $75.00 to the A.K.A.’s and the Feed the Hungry that the state mandated at the State Meeting. Brother Taylor seconded this motion and the motion was passed by the Brotherhood.)

Phillip A. Starke is the Career & Technical Instruction (CTI) Coordinator for Westside Grove High School. He is asking for any financial support to help students with disabilities that are enrolled in Career, Technical and Agricultural Education class’s grades 9-12. He stated that these funds can be in the form of a grant or by donation and this will help a student cover some of the expenses associated with the CTAE program. Please make checks payable to Westside High CTI. A receipt for your tax-deductible contribution will be provided by the school bookkeeper at your request.

Brother Kenneth R. Barnes, the Executive Director of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity sent out a thank you for all the work the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity were doing as it related to the voter registration drives.

(Brother Richard Brown stated that Brothers should give people a ride to the polls so that they can vote.)

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Renaissance T.E.A.M. Brother Ronald Taylor stated that only a few Brothers are coming out on Saturday’s to meet with the mentees. He stated the Renaissance T.E.A.M. would meet on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 9:00 – 2:00. He stated that Danny Purnell and Grady would be working with the mentees on the dance for the event. He also stated that he along with Emory Lamar, Corwin Cooper, Danny Purnell, Chris Harris, Doug Moorehead, went with the mentees to Atlanta to the Atlanta University college tour, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the King Home, the King Library, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the college fair and the football game between Florida A&M and Southern University at the Georgia Dome. The mentees were required to visit 25 college setups and come back and write a report on 5 of the colleges that they would be interested in going to.

Achievement Week: Brother Ronald Taylor stated that the Achievement Week Worship Service would be held at Lizziboro Baptist Church on 1180 Fort Hill Street on November 18, 2012. He is asking all Brothers to be present at 10:30 a.m. Brother Ken Morris will be the guest speaker. The meal will be served at the church after the service. The cost of the meal is as follows: $15.00 per brother, brother, wife or significant other $30.00, brother, wife, child - $35.00, Family - $40.00. Brother Taylor passed out the forms for the awards for the Achievement Week. He stated that the forms need to be filled out in detail and given to him or Brother Moorehead by November 1, 2012. Brother Chris Harris has put these forms on the website. The password for going on the website for the forms is “gabruhs”. This is under documents.

Grant Proposal: Brother Marcus Early stated that Heather is willing to work with the chapter on anything as it refers to the referrals. Brother Emory Lamar is the chair of this committee and he will have a meeting next week. Brother Richard Brown stated that the committee is charged to have at least one grant that they will propose to the body by the next meeting.

Mardis Gras: Brother Derrick Henderson stated that the Mardis Gras would be March 16, 2013 at the Goodwill Conference Center. Brother Henderson is asking for Brothers to pay their assessments early this year in the amount of $300.00. Tickets will only be given out to Brothers who have paid their assessments. All of the tickets will be numbered. There will be accountability for all tickets given out to the Brothers. He stated that you could either have tickets sold or sponsorships totaling the $300.00 assessment. He is also working on guest hotels. He has locked in the Holiday Inn Express and the rooms are $90.00, which includes the tax. It was stated that tickets could also be paid online. Brother Chris Harris stated that there are no additional fees when you pay on line since this is a 501c.

Que/A.K.A. Christmas Party: Brother Grady Jackson stated that the Christmas party would be held on December 26, 2012 at the City Club in downtown Macon. The chapter has already leased the City Club at a total cost of $800.00, which will be split, with the A.K.A.’s. The deposit for the facility will be turned in as soon as possible. Each organization will be given 250 tickets to sell. The ticket prices will be $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door. The chapter will get the profits from the bar. The AKA’s will do the food and the decorations. All of this will be confirmed next week. The committee members are Grady Jackson, Ronald Taylor, and James McClary.

State Meeting: Brother Moorehead stated that the 49th Georgia State Workshop was held in Columbus Georgia and it was hosted by the Lambda Iota and the Nu Delta chapters October 4th – 7th, 2012. The

Theme was Friendship and Fraternity, beyond 100 years. The workshop consisted of various leadership

training workshops including KRS, KF, fundraiser, Basileus and Vice Basileus. The state officers are as follows: State Representative – Kenneth Demons, 1st Vice – Craig Jackson, KRS – George Cook, KF – Douglas Shaw, and Counselor – Charles Lyons. The following are highlights from the state workshop: Lambda Phi Chapter received the Large Graduate Chapter of the Year Scholarship Award, Gamma Zeta received the highest GPA Scholastic Award awarded to the undergraduate chapter with the highest overall GPA, Tahrea Grant received the Ernest E. Just Undergraduate Advisor Award, Danny Purnell received the Colonel Charles Young Military Leadership Award, Bennie Raines received the State Superior Service Award, and Shedrick Martin received the Undergraduate Omega Man of the Year Award. The Lambda Phi Chapter also had an Archives Table and this was headed by Aaron Coleman and Scotty Evans and the rest of the Neo’s.

Car Scholarship Raffle: Brother Roger Jackson stated that the tickets have been purchased online. The commercials are on channels 58, 24, 16, 13, and Fox. The commercials are also on the radio 101.7, 100.9 and 100.1. He stated that the last year winner has been a plus in advertising this raffle. He is asking all Brothers to sell at least 15 tickets. All of the tickets have been numbered in an effort to keep track of them. He is also sending out flyers with the last year’s winner on them. He stated that Ken’s Stereo would donate the second, third, and fourth prizes. The goal is to give 16 scholarships. The raffle will go from September 27th – December 22nd, 2012. The tickets will be $20.00 each or five for $100.00. The 1st place prize will be the car or a cash option of $15,000. The drawing will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the Motivational Youth Complex at 1:00 p.m. Brother Chris Harris has set up the email blast for this raffle.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

Brother Richard Brown stated that if you know of anyone who would like to become a member of the fraternity that you should have them submit a letter to the P.O. Box 5141, Macon, Georgia 31208 and Brothers Ronald Taylor and Rickey Moore will be reviewing these and contacting these candidates. The process will start after Thanksgiving.

Brother Richard Brown stated that dues are due now. He stated that you could pay online through pay pal. There will be a late fee after October 31, 2012.

NEW BUSINESS:

Brother Richard Brown stated that Brother Vernard Hodges would be working on the Texas Hodem Fundraiser.

Brother Richard Brown stated that the chapter needs to look into raffling a hotel room and tickets to the Fountain City Classic Game which will be held in Columbus Georgia.

Brother Henry stated that the Mercer Homecoming is November 7 – 11th, 2012. The Brothers will also be dedicating the Fraternity House on campus on Friday night. Also on Friday night there will be a brotherhood night at the Dyer Facility.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Brother Marcus Daniel stated that the Brothers would be meeting at the Memorial Nursing Home every second Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Brother Richard Brown presented Brother John Rhodes with his 50-year service award and pin.

Brother Marcus Early stated that he has written a book entitled An Early Breakthrough from Within. He wrote this book through adversity. He hopes this book will impact lives. This book retails for $20.00. He also stated that this book would be good for students.
