Chairman’s report – Sue Jones

Well, what a year I’ve had since the last AGM. As most of you know, I was lucky enough to take part in the Olympic torch run. I ran through Asfordby on 3rd July and what a brilliant feeling that was. I had lots of support from friends and family, it was just a shame that it went so quickly. On top of that we were lucky enough to get tickets to the final Saturday of the Olympic Athletics events and amongst other things, saw Mo Farah win the 5,000 mtrs, which of course led to us singing the national anthem. Wow. On top of all that, I was blessed with two more grandchildren – all in all, a brilliant year.

LTNL has also had a good year. Although we were unable to use the Leisure Centre for a few weeks, we were able to use the University. This did take some organising, but it seems that all who played there really enjoyed it. It was a pleasure to play on a court with only one set of lines! A big thank you to the University for their support.

The plate match this year was between Hinckley Hurricanes 2 and Charnwood Sapphires 4. This was a great match to watch and very well umpired by Tamsen Mather and Elaine Henson. Sapphires struggled in the first two quarters but in the third and fourth pulled back to finish a very close second. I have to say, if ever there was a trophy for supporters, Hinckley Hurricanes 2 would win hands down.

The cup match between Hinckley Hurricanes 1 and Sapphires 1 was the same as last year, however, this year the roles were reversed with Sapphires1 being victorious. Again, a brilliant game of netball umpired superbly well by Kathy Stripp and Jane Hammersley. Well done to all concerned and indeed to the committee who worked so hard to put on this end of season showcase.

Our increase to 4 divisions has gone very well. Although the difference in play from the premier division to division 3 is vast, I feel that the enjoyment factor is negligible. It’s been a pleasure to watch the new teams improve as the season has gone on.

As usual, the points at the top of each division were very close. The points system makes teams realise that it is important to win a quarter even if you don’t win the match. This makes for a more competitive game.

As you know, we have increased the time between matches from 3 to 5 minutes. This seems to work much better especially for umpires. We also have replaced the balls more regularly, however, a couple of new ones have gone missing so we would be grateful if, after you have played, you could check that your club haven’t inadvertently picked up the wrong ball. Our have LTNL on them.

With regard to the posts and scoreboards, this is an ongoing saga. We are in constant touch with the Leisure Centre but with a change in management, this hasn’t been easy. However, we are hopeful that the new season will see new posts and new score boards. If this isn’t the case, it certainly won’t be through lack of effort on our part!

Unfortunately, Karen Price left our committee this year. We would like to say a big thank you to her for all her hard work whilst she was on the committee. She is sorely missed by us all.

As usual, I finish by saying a huge thank you to the committee on your behalf. Loughborough Town Netball League is the very best because of them.

Thank you.

Treasurer’s report – Bill Wilson

·  This season we roughly broke even

·  We replaced the balls more often, meaning £344 was spent on balls

·  The bulk of the admin fee was for the website

·  The expenditure on tournaments and courses was for the free introduction to umpiring session

·  We had two sponsorship requests this season

·  Miscellaneous income was from selling rule books at the intro to umpiring session

·  Outstanding match fees total £1,700

·  Outstanding expenditure totals £900 for the AGM/trophies

·  We’ve applied for internet banking!

·  We hope to get help from Leicestershire with paying for posts and scoreboards

Registration Secretary’s report – Suzanne Farley

This report will be short and sweet, as this has been a good year for registrations, and seems to run smoothly, which is probably a good indication that the procedure works well.

However I still have the same gripe about Team envelopes – please ensure that the player of the match and sportsmanship is completed which very occasionally missed, but it is still important to complete as this information is used to award the player of the league and sportsmanship trophies.

I will send the player registration forms via email for next season, and will also include details of how to make a payment via ‘BACS’.

And finally thank you for your support throughout the season, which helps to make my job a lot easier.

Umpire Secretary’s report – Jane Hammersley

I normally begin my report by thanking all umpires – well tonight I am going to ask them a question – WHY, WHY DO YOU UMPIRE?

Of course, there are many different reasons, but on the whole it is a necessary part of playing netball for most of us. It is not a ‘calling’, a desire for power or even a ‘pleasure’ (Kathy Stripp a notable exception of course), so please remember this when playing.

So, when seeking the answer to this thorny question myself I resorted to ‘The internet’ always a source of ‘curious information’ and I was very interested in a web site claiming:

Umpiring with 100% confidence is only a whistle blow away!

And in the second ebook you will ‘Umpire without fear’ or "100% money back guarantee if the Umpiring information is not up to your expectations". This got me thinking – can you really learn to umpire from a book? Wouldn’t this be equivalent to learning to drive, without actually driving a car? Well from January this year the path to C award qualification has become more structured with more tuition and mentoring along the way. Once you have begun on this ‘journey’ (now I sound like a finalist from X factor or something) Jo and Kathy will explain the requirements, but please be assured that the LTNL will do everything possible to support you with mentors / games / courses etc. All courses are displayed on the Leicestershire County Netball Ass site, we expect to hold a B award course in September and a C award course in October in Loughborough, again please keep checking the LCNA.co.uk website for more details.

One slight change for umpires officiating premier division matches. As per your recent minutes scorers are now required for premier division matches. Each team will be required to provide a scorer for their match and complete the score information which will be printed on the reverse of the envelope – umpires, you are now released from the shackles of scoring and will need only to indicate centre pass with a band. Full information can be found in the latest handbook.

One final plea from me – please don’t use facebook / text or email as a way to contact umpires at the last minute. I have several examples when, at the eleventh hour, teams who clearly had been let down resorted to a ‘one to many’ request for help, without success. Please make these request as part of a phone conversation, it shouldn’t take too long to find someone who will help you out, when they fully appreciate your plight.

And finally, I didn’t thank the umpires at the beginning, but it would be very remiss of me to do so, so thank you, everyone. As a small token from the league, each team will be issued with one England Netball Rule Book for your umpire (if you have more than one umpires, can I suggest that as clubs you invest in updating your umpires information) – please make sure that each secretary or team representative collect their copy tonight.

Fixtures Secretary’s report – Elaine Henson

Please see appendix 2 for final league positions and appendix 3 for next season’s league tables.

This season we increased to four divisions. It was more difficult to do the fixtures as I could not use the usual template – however I got there eventually!

I usually get lots of requests from clubs not requesting certain dates and/or times – I always try and meet these requests where possible.

There were no major problems this season. We had to move the matches to the university in December due to works at the Leisure Centre and all went well. There were two ‘snow’ occasions where matches had to be cancelled. We managed to secure extra time at the Leisure Centre to re-arrange the fixtures – the Leisure Centre were very accommodating and helpful to achieve this. Many thanks to all the teams involved, who accepted the changes without complaint!

I have distributed the Final League tables for 2012-13, also the proposed division split for next season. We have two teams withdrawn, University 1 (who have been invited to enter the BUSA League) and Charnwood Sapphires 3 (most players are off to University), plus one new team entry from Ashby.

Suggestions and ideas

Details of suggestions/ideas submitted and the committee’s responses will be circulated soon. A number of points need to be clarified first.
