Revelation, Repentance and Restoration – Job 40:6-42:17

40:6-41:34 I. God reveals His sovereign justice.

“Would you discredit my justice?”

:6-14 A . We cannot compete.

“Do you have an arm like God’s?”

40:15-41:34 B. Nature confirms.

:15-34 1. Consider the behemoth.

“Look at the behemoth…”

:15-23 a) He is strong.

“What strength he has in his loins…”

:24 b) He is illusive.

“Can anyone capture him by the eyes or trap him and pierce his nose?”

41:1-34 2. Consider the leviathan.

“Can you pull in the leviathan with a fishhook…?”

:1-11 a) He is uncontrollable.

“If you lay a hand on him, you will remember the struggle and never

do it again!”

:12-34 b) He is fearfully made.

“Nothing on earth is his equal - a creature without fear.”

42:1-6 II. God removes our arrogance.

“Then Job replied to the Lord…”

:2-3 A . He reminds us:

:2 1. of His unrivaled sovereignty

“…no plan of yours can be thwarted.”

:3 2. of our relative ignorance

“Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful

for me to know.”

:4-6 B. He revives us.

1. We think more of God.

“My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.”

2.  We think less of ourselves.

“Therefore I despise myself…”

3.  We change - - - God remains.

“…and repent in dust and ashes.”

42:7-9 III. God reproves our foolishness.

A.  He chastens our bad advisors.

“…I am angry with you and your two friends…”

B.  He elevates His faithful servants.

“…and go to my servant Job…. My servant Job will pray for you….

And the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.”

42:10-17 IV. God restores our fortunes.

“…the Lord made him prosperous again…”

:10a A. faithfully

“After Job had prayed for his friends…”

:10b-17 B. lavishly

“…and gave him twice as much as he had before.”

:11 1. consolation

:12 2. possessions
