Syllabus and Assignments
This unit will examine the birth of the modern civil rights movement, centering on the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. Key questions to be examined include: What factors helped lay the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement during the 1930s and 1940s? How did the landmark decision in Brown v. Board come about? How quickly or slowly was the decision in Brown v. Board implemented? What was significant about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, those involved, and the tactics used? What did the murder of Emmett Till indicate about race relations in Mississippi in the 1950s? What was the attitude of the nation toward civil rights in the late 1950s?
