PRIMARY ELECTIONS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED

The 2006 Primary elections are now history. While the turnout was disappointing, the new DRE voting system using the E-Slate machine could only be judged as a success. “I was extremely pleased with the new system”, County Chairman Walter Wilkerson said. “There were few problems in each Primary, but these were corrected quickly. I am very proud of the cooperation shown by both Party’s election workers, a fact that allowed every voter, regardless of Party affiliation, to cast a vote in their voting precinct.” Election returns were reported by 9:30 p.m., several hours earlier than usual.

The total cost of the elections was not available at the time of the printing of the Newsletter. The Final Cost Report was due to be filed with the Secretary of state on May 11th.

21,567 votes were cast in the GOP Primary and 1,906 votes were cast in the Democrat Primary. The Republican total was 10% of the registered voter total. Congressman Kevin Brady received the most votes, 17,689, followed closely by Senator Kay Hutchison’s 17,681. The six Precincts with the highest % turnout were: #72- 25.5%, #43- 23.8%, #29- 22.6%, #40- 20.3%, #15- 19.94% and #18- 19.89%.

13,858 votes were cast in the Republican Runoff Primary and 567 votes were cast in the Democrat Runoff Primary. Patrice McDonald polled the most votes with 4,320. Cara Woods had 3,583 votes and Justice Holcomb received 3,331 votes.

“I want to thank all the Election Judges and workers for a job well done”, Wilkerson said.
