Freshman Scholarships

Bateman Scholar Vision- The vision of this fund is to help students with financial need – and demonstrated potential – to prepare to become leaders in their local communities, disciplinary fields, and society in general.

Facilitating this Vision- This fund aims to facilitate this vision by supporting students in financial need who also show exceptional potential or achievement in one or more of the following: academic performance, undergraduate research, community service, community engagement, or overcoming significant life obstacles. These students may be either currently enrolled in a major within the College of Science or incoming students who have committed to major within the College of Science.

An applicant for this scholarship at the freshman level must:

  • Apply for scholarships and financial aid (complete a FAFSA) through the eWeber portal
  • Must beplanning to major in one the disciplines in the College of Science
  • Be a freshman (less than 30 credit hours earned) during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Be a full-time student (12 credit hours minimum) during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5

Please include as part of the application:

  • No binders, folders, page protectors, cover sheets, etc.
  • The College of Science Academic Scholarship Application Form
  • A current copy of your transcript (unofficial is acceptable)

Support Levels

Freshman Bateman Scholars- 8 awards a year @ $2,000

Once the Bateman Scholars are chosen the fund will provide financial resources to help pay for tuition, fees, books, research expenses, travel to scientific meetings, fund community engagement projects, etc.

Students who are awarded Bateman Scholarships shall be expected to

  • Give short (1-2pages) reports semi-annually to the COS Scholarship Committee of their outstanding activities and progress
  • Be full-time student progressing toward graduation
