SUMMER IN THE CITY 2012

WELCOME TO SITC 2012! We are excited for another great summer city mission at the Cathedral. Summer in the City (SITC) is an urban ministry experience hosted by St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 5100 Ross Ave., Dallas, Texas. A week at SITC begins at 4:00 PM on Sunday and ends after lunch on Friday. The dates for the 2012 sessions are:

Cost:Total cost per person is $125. Each group has submitted a $500 deposit. The balance of the money is due upon arrival.

Registration forms: All participants, students and sponsors, must bring a completed Diocese of Dallas Youth Event Registration Form with them to Summer in the City. Blank forms may be downloaded from ddyc.org.

Accommodations: Students and sponsors at Summer in the City are housed in classrooms on the second floor of Garrett Hall on the Cathedral campus. Adults and students, males and females, will stay in separate rooms. Please bring cots or air mattresses. Men’s and Women’s bathrooms with showers are in the hall on the third floor.

Breakfast and Lunch:A Continental-style breakfast will be provided each day with items such as cereal, milk, bagels, fruit, muffins, etc. Coffee set-up will also be provided. Breakfast items will be placed in the Great Hall kitchen for the participant’s to self-serve.

All students and sponsors must remain on campus during lunch times. The Dallas Independent School District provides daily lunches for all children 18 and under. It is part of the Summer in the City program that the students eat lunch with the Bishop’s Camp children. All sponsors play an integral part in maintaining student safety and supervision during and after lunch. Lunch makings for the sponsors will be provided in the Great Hall kitchen.

Snacks: Each group may bring snacks for free time but they must not be eaten during ministry times or when the Bishop’s Camp children are present. We ask that snacks be labeled and kept in the Great Hall kitchen and consumed only in the common areas (not the sleeping areas).

Dinner:Dinners are provided by various guilds and groups from St. Matthew’s Cathedral.

What to Bring:

Comfortable clothes ( no short shorts, no spaghetti straps, no legging pants)

Closed-toed shoes for off campus work at service agencies

Nice casual clothes (no shorts or T-shirts) for those going to C.C. Young

Sleeping bag, air mattress, pillow

Towel & wash cloth

Toiletries– Sunscreen, gloves and hat for garden work

Water Bottles

Daily Chapel: Each group is expected to design and lead the 10 minute morning Chapel service for the Bishop’s Camp children. In the past this has included such things as telling a Bible story, skits, teaching songs and leading prayers.

Group Covenant:On the first night of Summer in the City, each group will write and sign a covenant about living in community that will be posted in the common room.

Ministries: Besides serving the children who attend the Bishop's Camp at the Cathedral, thestudentmissioners this year will be involved with some ministries such as the following: the Food Bank, the community garden and food program at Our Savior Church, Austin Street Shelter and Buckner Shoes, C.C.Young, Jubilee Center, Volunteer Center of North Texas. Each week will be different.

Interns:The interns will be on site during each week of Summer in the City and will be housed there. As your guide, they will lead the Bible study meditations/activities for your group each evening and help with debriefing after each ministry experience.They are truly looking forward to joining with you in ministry to your students.

House Rules

This is a mission trip and the focus is on building community and serving others, therefore student missioners are to refrain from using cell phones or other electronic items during their ministry time at Summer in the City, as well as other times that may be stated in the group covenant.

Student missioners are not to leave the grounds without permission or the accompaniment of adults.

Adult missioners (sponsors) may not leave the grounds without coordinating with one of the interns.

Leave places in better shape than when you arrived.

Be on time.

After “lights out”, do not leave the second floor.

The fire doors between Garrett Hall and the Great Hall will be locked each evening at 5 PM.
